Taking a "brake" from my technical issues to get some cosmetic work done. The hard top is covered with some kind of textured paint. I'll eventually strip it all the way down, but for today, I'll be happy to clean up the hatch door.

I counted 4 layers of paint on the door. It used to be green. On the top, it was blue...and maybe red...at least parts. :)

Now it's Dune Beige

This was my first time using a Surface Conditioning Tool, I am a big fan now. I have a few other body panels that need to be "detextured". This tool efortlessly cuts through the old paint and leaves a beautifully ready surface without clogging the abrasive.
One thing I've found is that a single edge razor blade will often strip off many layers of paint down to the primer in a single pass. I can't say for sure how well it would work for your paint though.

I think you missed an opportunity here:

While on a work trip I had some time and visited the Alfa Romeo museum near MXP. While everyone was looking at the iconic Italian cars, this AR51 Matta (1951-1954) off to the side jumped out at me. It had some very similar styling to the J20s, which launched in 1955. The wheel arches look very 40 series.

Like a lot of Alfas, this had an i4 DOHC engine which thankfully Toyota didn’t use

I drove my 40 about 60 miles (120 round trip) this weekend over to Grapeland, TX for a Bluegrass festival at Salmon Lake Park... Sorry, no pictures, I don't think I touched a cell phone once, perfect weekend! Funny thing was, no one played the classics like Uncle Dave Macon or Stringbean. I have all that stuff on cassettes and I would love to play it in my 40 while I'm driving. So, question to the forum: Is there a Toyota radio (AM/FM) with a cassette player that fits in the <1 DIN oem spot in the dash? I think @ToyotaMatt or @Engineer8000 might know? Thank ya'll and have a great week!

@GreaseMonkey try retrosound manufacturing…. You may find some type of connection with Bluetooth or cabling that can get you there although I have not seen any cassette style radios in quite some time. By the way…. I did transfer several of these to a thumb drive to ATTEMPT TO keep up with technology

Got about 18 more to do

I am glad to hear others travel by Land Cruiser to see live shows and their favorite flavor of musical inspiration .

My first opportunity to take my 2 Gals Erin & GHOST on a musical adventure was to D.C. ‘s 9:30 Club to jamb out to the Black Angles .. There my current long term favorite cup of tea and always roll with the Dandy Warhols or The Brian Jonestown Massacre one opening up for the others randomly ..

Great wrenching to all 3 bands .,

So …

Your 0EM AM / FM w/ Cassette …..

- you mention ( 1-DIN ) ….?

- do you have a 10/82 - 10/85 4# series anything with the “
Star Wars “ two-tone Pewter & Black switch panel ?

- or

- 9/82 - older 4# Munckin-Size-Spec. Radio opening ?

The Star Wars later switch panel uses a
Full Size single DIN …fyi …

The “ DIN “ term does not apply to the early smaller “ munchkin size-spec. Tuner Pegs on each side of the radio 📻

Yes , it can be confusing tech here a bit … ..,?

If you have seen a full size single DIN in a pre-9/82 4# series ? , then a Butcher was involved and things like a SAWSAW Milwaukee Torch blade …

That is the starting point here for your OEM Cassette Tape Player option …

Oh ….snap almost 😅 forgot ?

OEM 8-Track Cassette Player …

Or

Next Gen. circa era ones …

FACT : Johnny Cash sported a 1973 FreeBorn Red FJ40 he bought new off the dealership lot , it is still part of his Estate Collection . His adult Children operate and Manage ….

That's a good idea, and I have certainly seen the RetroSound radios. Up till now I have thought my OEM radio delete plate was cooler though LOL. There's something about cassettes though, right? Records came back, I am hoping cassettes are next, they were super convienient! I also have my Emerson "Walkman" that still works perfectly. (I also have a real-deal Sony Walkman that needs some belts). I was given some RTR (Reel to Reel) players recently, and the old music coming out of those is surreal! Maybe part of the appeal is the retro aspect of it all, which falls in line with driving an FJ40 too :).

Ah, no sir, it is a <1 (less than one) DIN opening in a 1978 stock OEM dash FJ40, and I would not consider taking a sawzall to it :). It really limits things, I know, but the original 1978 FJ40 dash is more important than tunes honestly. It's unfortunate in one way, but fortunate in others. I think it would be a unicorn radio that might fit the bill. Bluetooth is okay and all, untill it doesn't work (all the time) and then that just frustrates me to no end!

Love the Black Angels.

Check your PM. ;)

Those forms of media are all from my teen and early 20’s days. Back in 1971, I saved as much as I could and bought a Panasonic AM/FM/ 8 track radio that mounted , (get this) IN THE DASH of my VW bug… back then any accessory sound stuff was hung off the bottom of the dash. At 18 that was so cool… totaled the car a week later.

Seems like Johnny could easily afford it too…

I’ve had mine for a bit now, and love it! Bluetooth connects right to my phone to play music and I mounted the mic for hands free calls.

The mic is right under the brake/fasten belts light in this photo.

I finally bit the bullet and tried one of those 30 mile days. Only issue - my headlights stopped working!

Still have dash lights, taillights, brake lights, parking lights, turn signals, snd hazards, but both h4 koito headlights that I added last year have died, simultaneously. Voltage seems fine, and is steady to the plug.

I swapped some H4 bulbs out of the Miata into it and they lit right up.

I guess it’s time for city racer’s LED’s.

I installed a 2000 Camry single DIN Toyota branded radio in my 60. They also came in early 2000s Corollas and seem to be about $10 at the junkyard. AM/FM/Cassette + optional trunk mounted CD changer. You can wire the CD changer input for Bluetooth, which I’ve done. So I have radio, tapes, and I can set up some music playing from my phone. No adapters, no visible wires. I bet it can be installed in a 40 as well. It’s just a matter of wires for battery power (if you care about preset radio stations), ignition power, speaker wires, and ground. The Bluetooth system I cobbled together takes more wiring.

I was able to successfully remove the stubborn old front differential fill plug. It was quite difficult. I then filled the differential with fresh fluid and installed the new drain plug. Used a bolt extractor and vice grips.

I'd recommend Installing castor shims to compensate for the longer front shackles.

I've just installed some at the same time as I installed an axle with rebuilt knuckles, added longer shackles, and replaced all the TREs. I can now let go of my death grip on the steering wheel. It doesn't quite follow the curves in the road, but almost. I can let go of the steering wheel for the first time in the 32 years and more than 100k miles.
