You're pushing 60 mph there Nolan; living close to the edge! :p

And low on fuel!

@gator25 Nolan I am also glad you kept the old straight six! Excellent work btw! Looking good.

When my gas gage looks like that it is best to be sitting next to the gas pump.

Yeah your rite @1911, lol I was hauling butt there!

@David1947 and @4x4veteran @Vossie gas gage doesn't work, and also have a problem with the suction on the tank. Only have use of 6-7 gallons, got to pull the tank.

@tls3601 Thank you. I'm glad we kept the old six to, I like it and it does really good, pulls strong. I'd probably kill myself with a SBC.

country Roads.....got to love them!

Oh, for my rig, as I was driving in this morning, I had a "Brake Check" moment! I was doing about 40-mph, two does passed well in front and I could see a third on the side...well, the third made a late decision that almost cost it, it's life! Lucky my new brakes locked my 40 down without swerving and hitting the deer nor the on-coming cars.....and I drove on![/QUOTE]

@GA Architect yes sir your right there, you never know what might be waiting for you.

@gator25 I frequently have to dodge mule deer on the way out of my development early in the am! Much larger than the white tails I grew up around back East, but either can do loads of damage. Took a while to get my brakes dialed, all stock but plenty strong now! Can't believe how it was when I first got her.

@tls3601 yes sir most of the deer around here are pretty small compared to others, good thing not long ago a friend cut one in half on his bike. But sure don't want to hit one with the 40 after all that work!
Still haven't got the brakes on her just rite, they're good to go as far as being set but still needs one pump to lock her up.
I have bled the living s#$t out of them.

@gator25 for me that last part of the pie on my brakes was the new booster and booster rod clearance where it meets the back of the master cylinder. Been outstanding since then. Using one of Rogers @Racer65 boosters-excellent! Two long time Land cruiser guys told me they had never driven a 40 that stopped so well

Thank you @tls3601 , I just made the new rod the same length as the old master's. I've been suspicious of the old booster since hooking it up, think I may be losing a little vacuum there.

Yes sometimes it is hard to narrow down the weak link so to speak.

Ran it on an errand to pick up one of my new pallet racks

Had to retighten the ratchet straps 3 times in the 8 Miles from the store to my shop.:eek:

I am installing 2.5" Lift on my old baby!

Off with the original leafs and the Man a Fre lifetime warranty overload shocks on the rear, Off with the dual shock setup that has served me well over the decades!(Both installed in 1981.) Off with the BFG 33x950-15's MT's that have finally carked and aged out over the past 17 years! Never had a flat!

Learned a lot so far...I've been installing my Pro Comp 2.5" lift kit so I can fit my new 33x10.50-15 Dick Cepek Extreme Terrain rubbers. Did not want that wide of tire but since the 9.50's are no longer available in a tolerable tread, Chose the Cepeks.\

I'm bummed. I got three of the leafs/shackles/bushings on. Single handed just me doing the deed...(after quotes of $600+ to 800+ for shop installation.) After the first quadrant completed, taking awhile figuring out what to do, the next two went on great...That is a story in itself. But today I went for the last one... Drivers side rear. As I was unbolting the front inner pinon shackle pin I sheared off one of the two bolts that thread into the spring perch....#%#*. Whaaat?

I think I will just bolt on the new leafs as before and bolt on the pin nut and the one remaining little bolt and then maybe give it a good heavy tack with the welder on side of the friggin sheared bolt. Screw it! I figure I'll never need to replace the bushing or springs again. I am 66 years old and have ran the original leafs and bushings until now. So I figure if it doesnt last the next 40 years for me and needs attention, just grind off the weld and fix.
Flawed Thinking?? Suggestions?

Um and no pics!!!!! What the hell man we need porn!

The rebuild is 99.9% complete and will be bringing my truck, 78 FJ40LV-KCJA, home today!!!!
Started out with a 78 chassis and a 67 body (couldn't find anything else here in Maine that was not rusted out 2003).
Started the rebuild May, 2017.
Swapped out the rusted 78 frame with a good 63 frame. Bought an Aqualu 3/4 aluminum tub and paid shipping from British Columbia to Maine. I had a fair to good 78 cowling and we restored it to mate with the Aqualu. Was going to paint it Toyota FJ Cruiser 6V7 but decided instead to paint it a FJ40 color Olive Green 637. Bought Nason Fulthane single stage paint and the color match to the Toyota 637 paint chip chart was way off but after using some of the gallon could not return it. So it's not exactly what I wanted but ok. Everything is now 1978, except the wire harness which is from a 77. There are differences between the 77 and 78 wire harness so some connectors have to be re-pinned ie. windshield wiper motor, combination instrument panel, horn circuit and headlight/highbeam flasher switch.
The 78 cowling is different than the 67. I was running a 34/34 progressive Weber carburetor but it would not fit next to the Brake master cylinder with the 78 brake booster. So I bought a Trollhole Carburetor.
(I forgot to mention that an old style 19.5 gallon gas tank will not fit in the Aqualu 3/4 aluminum tub with the different transmission hump cover it will only take the newer 16.5 gallon gas tank-had to buy a new tank.)
I had heard that Trollhole carbs were good to go right out of the box, so we installed it and fired her up. Much spitting and coughing out of the carb. So I came back here and searched for indicators of the problem. a lean indication with possible intake vacuum leaks. Checked pcv and brake booster and their hoses-OK, Also read about possible crossing of spark plugs.....but that couldn't happen to me....how would anyone be so stupid to cross plug wires??? Well, number 1 and 6 were crossed, ran much better after THAT was corrected. Started dialing the Trollhole in and found the idle mixture screw 4.5 turns out, just had to start over from scratch. 7 degrees BTDC @ 650 rpm. It runs pretty good now but not 100%. With the Weber, once it was dialed in I could just hit the ignition and the truck would start immediately, can't seem to get the Trollhole to do that. Some pictures of the engine compartment with more pictures of the truck coming.

Sounds fair to me...funny I just installed a 2.5" lift and my dad graciously giving me a hand overtightened and broke that same bolt ! I'm not too fussed about it, doesn't see any real load once everything else is tightened up.

Put on the windshield frame after putting the wiper motor and linkage in, along with the wires for it and the dome light. Rebuilt the coolant tank bracket. Of course had to drill holes in later model fenders. Put the front seats in. Set up the brakes, did a ruff toe end adj. Reset the choke and idle mixture. Put some pretty covers over the battery terminals, installed the new marker lights. Drove it for the first time since starting the rebuild about 1230 Christmas morning. Damn it was cold!

Came up with this to get around cutting the Line X out of grommet holes. Found the plugs at Ace. Bout ready go back and choke the S@#t out of the guys who sprayed it.

I had a tub lined once. They masked nothing. I feel your pain, it was a huge PITA. Had to re tap every threaded hole. They sprayed it up under the dash as well.

Agreed. It’s not a problem until the pin or the bushing is SO worn out that it’s REALLY trying to turn the pin

Wouldn't have been so pissed but, I had put bolts in every threaded hole and marked where the grommets were to go. Went over the whole damn tub. The guy says no problem we got it, we have plugs for those holes. Where the bolts were I should have put one on the reverse side also. You can't trust people to do a good job anymore, no matter what it is. Man it makes me mad as hell. I like to have had a stroke when we went to pick it up, they reduced the price so I took it.
