Picked up the next project. Bouught this one last year and finally got around to picking it up. It's an all original 12 of 78 build "high altitude" one owner. I thought he was the second owner but he explained he bought it new in Jan of 80. My plans are a full nut and bolts resto, but for now I'm going to get it running. Polish up the patina, and enjoy it for a bit before putting it under the knife.

Was a long day at over 13 hours driving time.
Just arrived home.

How well did your 4Runner pull that 40?

Nice trucks!!

It did real well. Only about 10 mpg when towing, but had plenty of power even over the mountains.
Ran about 2200 rpms on the flats at 60mph. Any sort of grade it would shift down and run about 3500rpm. It's an automatic. 2016.

@thecrazygreek my '78 had oxidation just like yours when I got her as well. Amazing what some love and hard work can do to turn around single stage paint! I used lots of Griots products, excellent paint care!!

Ok the pump is no longer available

Thanks..

After looking a bit deeper, I realize this rig is missing allot of smog equipment. So a full de smog is in order.

Can anyone point me to a good de smog write up?

@peteinjp what year is that 40? Interesting mirror setup, I take it they came that way in Japan? Also the rear axle looks like it is of the full float variety, that is off a 60 series?

He is in Japan :D

I believe it's all stock for a JDM BJ46

Cleaned, prepped, and painted the used parts for the water pump replacement and oil cooler installation on my '76 FJ40. I still have five days to finish, including the FJ60 distributor/coil/igniter installation, before my next leg of the FJ40 Cross Country Expedition:

I started to remove the stock upper housing on the FJ40, and I snapped one of the two bolts even though I was being extra careful. I should be able to remove the remains and salvage the housing.
Took a breather from the multi-day push to get the FJ40 ready for a trip to Colorado yesterday, which had to be cancelled at the last minute - my radiator drain petcock repair failed and I had coolant running over the garage floor again. I was able to get everything done except for the coil/igniter swap. I worked on the old water outlet housing and was able to remove the broken bolt remains, clean out the threads, and salvage the part. I may keep it as a spare for my '71 FJ40 with '76 2F until I complete the oil cooler upgrade on it.

At least this part went well:

@tls3601 yes it's a Bj46 and the mirrors are Oem. All jeeps and land cruiser of that era had fender mounted mirrors- it was a regulation.

The rear axle is a 70 series unit that I added for front and rear dif locks.

@peteinjp very cool rig and I would imagine quite stout with that rear axle.............

@tls3601 Thanks- it's pretty basic very solid nothing fancy. Just building it up one step at a time. Truth be told the rust in the rear is always bothered me even though it's not bad yet.

So I'm actually a little excited about tackling this project. I'm gonna go with 3/16" sides but I think most people would never even notice without looking carefully. I like to keep a stock appearance and not stray too far away from the original roots- but make it as capable as I can within those constraints.

More history here:

84 bj46 long term maintenance, repair and upgrade- making it mine.

Finally washed the Rubicon off the 40 and did a post-trip inspection, since the Rubithon was the maiden voyage for the new engine/trans combo. Just a few very minor issues and a couple hours work, including a disconnected fuel vapor line and leaking front pinion seal. Already looking forward to the next trip!

Made this little tailgate. It's not the most elegant thing but it works and even sort of matches in color.

I made this "red neck" tailgate last summer. I had an old piece of 3/4" plywood that I cut out, and a buddy of mine said he had some old galvanized roofing. I skinned the plywood with the tin roof . The tin had a nice lip that covered the top of the wood. Was surprised how stout it was.:hillbilly:

Mr. Dog, Looks great! how well does it cool, and can you feel a power loss when it's running?
