I see a perfectionist at work!

I've only experienced mill scale as a problem (where it is so thick it can flake or chip) with heavy-gauge steel and never yet with thin sheetmetal (and I think some degree of surface roughness, so long as it cannot flake, is actually very good for aiding paint adhesion.)

On the general subject of steel ............Steel standards are all topsy turvy these days... Here in New Zealand we currently have a big long-established steel supplier that people (including myself) used to trust in serious poo from importing and distributing sub-standard steel (that's gone into Christchurch Earthquake Rebuilds and into the New Waikato Expressway Overbridges). But then this problem is with "welded reinforcing mesh" and "tube piles".

PS. I hasten to add that I'm certainly not implying there is anything substandard in your sheetmetal Steffan

This was 16g cold rolled sheet. The mill scale was very thick and extremely gummy: my 80 grit sanding disc wouldn't touch it, it would just get slimed over. Had to go over it a couple times with some of those course removal discs. Almost seemed a shame because it probably added a good deal of rust prevention

Continued to stitch together my steel quilt that some call a quarter panel. Also welded up and ground my lower quarter panel patch that covers the rear sill horn. No pic but it's in video 12 I think. Videos 9 and 10 show the root cause of the rust... The extent of it, and the hack job bondo and steel "repair"

@roadstr6 - thanks for the tips, beveling the edges helped quite a bit!

Looking forward to going to cars and coffee tomorrow am, ONSC (Olde North State Cruisers) should have a solid showing! Will try to snap a pic

Uploaded some vids

Fj40 quarter panel rust repair(video 10) - root cause of rust = bag of salt + leaky roof

Being that I'm running my rig in this configuration for the Summer:

It received a good 'ol fashion Georgia Baptism from a "Pop-Up Shower" yesterday on the way home from work. Let me tell ya, it was a "Toad Stomper!" for sure. But I didn't care, it was rather enjoyable cruising in the rain. Being all nice and dry, well, at least the front of me that is. Funny thing was, the rain stopped and I couldn't figure why my wipers weren't clearing the windshield.....The back-draft of the bikini top sucked a good bit of moisture all the way up to the interior of the windshield. It was coated with water as well as the back of my t-shirt. Needless to say, I gave the interior a great cleaning when I got home.

I still carry a 6" wide squeegee for the inside of the windshield. It works for both rain and condensation.

Sounds familiar. That's what I had to do with the Datsun Roadster (beater) that I had. Even with the top on, due to the leaky nature of the car, and the poor defroster it had.

Once the car warms up, it's not needed to defrost. It tends to be wet in the winter, and I don't like to sit and idle till it is warmed up.

I'm sure that replacing the foam/seals in the heater and cleaning out the debris from in the heater core fins. Right now, It's a 42 year old heater that hasn't seen a lot of love.

Went on an off-road trip from SC, into NC and then to TN.

Visited Max Patch, with a beautiful 360 view of the GSMtns. I had to clear the file filter and check the float bowl - b/c the Weber carb is still acting squirrelly. Time to install a THC and be done with it.

Glad to see you getting off-road with her, Erik!!

Great pictures!!

Beautiful composition on the pics Erik. Is that front antenna a 2 meter? I just passed my General exam and am studying to take the Extra Exam June 25th. Thinking about what radio to mount in "Forever 40" and antenna locations.

The antenna is a K40 CB antenna mounted to a medium spring. It has only hit the front of the truck once / twice while wheeling. The Heavy Duty spring would probably stop it from moving much at all, but I kind enjoy seeing it bouncing around - my :princess:, not so much :). I didn't want to install on the tub, and I have @lcwizard dual swingouts... so I mounted mine to the front bumper - similar to an ONSC fellas setup - I think it was @erymer 80 that inspired me.

I am waiting for @CharlestonG8R to line up an amateur radio exam through his employer, but have decided to go with an 8W handlheld for the time being. I just received 2 Baofeng BF-F9v2+ Dual Band handhelds today...

went wheeling/camping/exploring with the Copper State Cruisers in Northern Arizona

But the BEST part of the weekend was G-man getting his first ever driving experience. And I was good enough to make it in the FJ40...

Caught it on fire.... :(

We were heading up to the mountains, and the engine started rattling loudly. I was looking for a spot to pull over, and it just shut off... coasting down the hill I heard the distinct sound of... fire. :( Crap. Pulled over, got the wife and dog out, then opened the hood to find that sure enough.. the carburetor was on fire and the air cleaner, wiring for engine, and distributor were all pretty well cooked. Ouch... just in time for summer. I am pretty bummed. My wife and I are going to get the engine replaced in the FJ55 next weekend, so hopefully we can have it running in a week or two and have a cruiser for summer, but it's just not going to be the same without my 40. :(
