Well, not what I did with my 40 this weekend, but maybe it was. I forgot to attach my relay/fuse box top when I finished up some wiring and the bastard made it way over to the manifold. And let me tell you, the smell is not amazing. Lesson learned. (Apologies for the language on the box top). ;-)

Used a $40 Amazon alignment set to dial in my toe in. I also ran a longer capped fuel hose for my return to tank line, the previous one I made was lower than the tank level and leaked when I filled up the tank. I’m officially leak free for now.

I got my knuckle rebuild merit badge this week.

Used up nearly all of a roll of blue shop towels.

Pleased to say I have very shiny knuckles now.

One thing I discovered is my Warn wheel locks are "not like the others". In my case mine didn't have the circlip shown in so many videos. It has a bolt through a retaining washer (or is it a bushing in this application). Anyway, I shot a video of the disassembly that I'll post later.

Wound up doing a front caliper replacement while I was in there.
I'd be super stoked that this work is done, but while test driving it I discovered a radiator leak. :bang:
So that's on tomorrows list.

You replaced your seals and bearings too, right? Got the heavy duty inner seal from Marlin Crawler (Cruiser Tea sells too)?

If you only used one giant roll of blue towels I am impressed. My 40 was gnar and I went through a six pack of rolls (and a case of beer! drum roll pleae>>>)

Yes, everything from the inner axel seal on out was replaced. I used the kit from Cruiser Outfitters and included the wheel bearings and races.

I think I have it on video, but when I dropped the driver's side lower bearing cap I looked away and heard "ping, ping, ping". I saw what looked like steel teeth falling out of the bottom of the knuckle. Turns out the race had disintegrated and half was stuck on the lower bearing cap and the other half was still in the knuckle. The race was dented by the bearings.

Makes you glad you are going through the effort when you find "hidden gems" like that.

Thanks! It’s a USA (CA) car. Those are just the standard tails & reverse lights for the wagons…at least I think they are?

It's on the chopping block now, though, as I’m having a terrible time keeping 4 “fun” vehicles maintained (and insured!). In front of the wagon is the old road and track “million mile Miata.” It has ~360K miles on it and needs more. And the hood in the background is the original hood off of my ‘68 mustang.

Amazing job, I want to perform this next. I already installed 4Runner calipers and rebuilt my warm hubs locks. I’m also going to order the whole kit. Thanks for the inspection, I’ll be ordering a case of blue towels soon for sure.
 
I thought one of the best pieces of practical advice that I came across for doing a knuckle job was placing a couple of large cardboard boxes under each wheel for catching all of the old grease & debris and chunking dirty shop towels. It helps to keeps the shop floor somewhat clean.

I’ll add that lining the box with a can liner helps too.
I put in directly under to catch all the lovely stuff that spawns in there.
 
Lot of burn through so far…… going to switch to .023 wire! Knew there was a reason I’ve been procrastinating about body work……

Meh - Suppose it’s better than the bondo & wire mesh that was in it before………. Tip my hat to those of you that are good at this! 🤣
I had the same frustrating experience fabricating a custom exhaust for the 3F-E I put into my 40 and trying to get it to pass a bubble leak test. It was a never ending cycle of cleaning, welding, testing, swearing, and repeating. I here that TIG welding is better for body work and may try that when I get to the body work. There is a nice TIG welder and a good instructor at the makerspace here in town.
By the way, if you plan on mig welding with .023" wire, make sure you buy a liner specifically for it. If you use a liner for thicker wire, you will spend more time clearing jams than welding. I would also run the wire through one of those squishy ear plugs between the wire coil and the drive to remove contamination too. And keep your wire dry when not in use. I keep mine in a round tin can with Desiccant in it.

For all you oil pan gasket fans out there…tried a new hack (literally) for a second try after the saddle risers leaked due to puckering cork gasket ends. Gotta tell ya, this hack worked like a charm…was able to get those risers locked in perfectly. Of course you need to hack up an old pan to set the FIPG for a few hours and then on to victory…
