Black Rock Desert trip with two oldest boys and a couple fellas. The 80 was certainly at home out there. Reminded again that (arguably) a Land Cruiser’s biggest strength is covering a lot of ground, with a lot stuff, over most any terrain, with amazing comfort. Looks good doing it too :)

Don’t tell Mom
Please tell me the boys weren't riding up there and this was just when you were stopped. If they were shame on you and I would not have posted a picture of you child endangerment / negligence.

^^ yep, little monkeys jumped on top at every stop!

@rghouse is that Stone Gray a factory non-metallic color? Looks great.

Thank you! no, it is a Sprinter van stock solid color. It no-doubt had a lot of playa dirt on it by the end, the first pics are more true to color. It usually looks beige, but also looks gray. That’s why I picked it. PM if you want more info.

Great color! What kind of wheels are those?

Those are the factory FJ wheels they are only 15" so won't fit a FZJ

Did a little roof Rack refresh / stretch / renew. My old RustFerr / Conferr rack was looking very bad after about 10 years of AZ sun and lots of use.. So I took it down, Chopped it, weeded in 20 inch extension, welded in supports and new floor slats, then sanded it down, and primed it + spray bebdlined it. Replaced all hardware with Stainless steel bolts and took the time to re-wire and remake the entire wring loom to my 4 front lights and 2 rear lights. Removed the snorkel to accomplish it all and found lots of crud behind it.. Anyhow also ran a signal wire from the reverse lights to activate my two rear facing rack lights with the reverse switch including a diode so now they are auto activated by shifting into reverse or I can switch them on with my center counsel switches. Took the best part of the weekend, but it looks new and everything works perfectly.. For all of you with old accessory wiring especially on the rack the old cables were corroded and brittle after 10+ years of service so if might pay off to renew every decade or so.. Mine were wrapped and then put in plastic conduit then the plastic conduit wrapped again and I still had brittle wires and green corrosion in the old wires.. Now all nice and new wires re-wrapped, ready for another 10 years.

After I had rebuilt the rear axles, I saw the brakes and was in awe. Down to the metal with uneven wear causing a nice groove to be worn in the back of one of the rotors. So new centric cryo rotors, EBC green stuff pads and some bleeding of the dark brake fluid later, piece of mind restored. Front is semi better with atleast some pad material, but getting the same treatment once I rebuild the front here shortly.

Finally got the roofrack back where it belongs. No wind noise, no vibrating lights and 12 amps coming off the solar panels.
Left her on the launch pad and load her up tomorrow. Heading to Georgia, North Carolina and Kentucky on Wednesday.

Let me know how it goes. I am in need of the same I've just been kicking the can.

@kenscs
Should be no need to lift the body from frame. Have dropped tanks more times than I care to remember and never had an issue. Finally learned it was worth the time to pull the read drive shaft to make more room to get the tank out though it’s possible with it in place.

Thank you. It's actually not the longer strap that is the issue. When I was backing out the bolt on the front strap, the bolt snapped off, and I had to drill out the bolt. The issue is the short little strap that bolts into the frame. The bolt that holds that strap is right over the frame and won't back out without lifting the frame a bit. I found a thread about body removal here tonight and it mentioned to replace that strap while body was off since it can't be done without body lifted. Since I don't want to do a full removal, I am going to try and loosen all the driver side body mounts and see if I can Tip it up a bit. If not, I will just have to leave the old one and use a back-up nut to hold the strap bolt. But I am kind of OCD about making it perfect, so will make attempt to get the new little strap in there!

Been cooped up at the house while we quarantine in anticipation of our first baby’s arrival, good news is that’s given me a ton of time to wrap up the year long wiring project in the 80. Over 250’ of marine wire/cable and a few dozen Deutsch connectors later and I think I finally have all of the old aftermarket wiring replaced with a single harness that runs all the way from the back tire swing to the front bumper lights.

The delta console was really the missing piece to the whole puzzle and gave a central location to house all of the fused ignition and constant power supplies, small inverter, GMRS, and HAM radios.

Despite not having the radios themselves installed in the console yet, there’s still a shocking amount of room inside the console. The delta panels inside made it really easy to keep all the wiring tucked out of the way.

As usual, the deutsch connectors were a breeze to work with and made it really easy to pre-wire everything outside of the truck and then install all at once after the new carpet went in. Some random pictures I got when I actually thought to snap one :grinpimp:

New subwoofer going in under the driver’s seat, ended up rotating it 90 deg to get a bit more clearance

Reinstalled the Wits End FEMs and I love how they came out. Utilized the side buttons for front/rear footwell lights and installed a 120v Matrix outlet that goes to a 120w Samlex pure sine inverter in the center console. Perfect for charging those fancy Apple laptops my wife uses for work

<Placeholder for a pic>

I rolled my old cow out of the shop after three years and nine months of down time. Timing set is replaced, head is rebuilt and back on, oil pans are on, new water pump, pcv and thermostat. Radiator is back in. New exhaust manifold bolts and radiator hoses are coming tomorrow. Then the fan and shroud go on and battery boxes back in.

I'm a couple days away from starting but need to check that the radiator is still watertight. Then oil, gas and a turn of the key. So close!
