Still playing catch-up. Two weekends ago we took the 60 to Cimmaron Canyon Sate Park NM. The Palisades area is very scenic. There are some very nice State campgrounds in the canyon.

I used to live outside of Cimaron. Your binging back a lot of memories. I climbed at both Sugarite and cimaron canyon.

I'm not really into collecting but here is one piece I picked up from that area years ago. Found it on the ranch I worked at. I think it's petrified wood.

I'd say definitely petrified wood and a very nice piece - complete chunk of a limb or trunk.

There is a lot of pretty country around here. Liked Ute Park on the lower end of Cimmaron canyon.

We've run NM 64 to FR1950 (aka Cerrososo Rd) up into Carson NF. We turned around at McCrystal Creek campground. Will definitely be taken the FJ60 up there for a few days this spring.

Only downside to this area is public lands are scattered. Got spoiled in CO - it was BLM everywhere you went.

In the before pic below is what I used.

My fuel filter kept filling up with rust so I finally took the time to pull the gas tank and treat it.
I pressure washed the inside to remove most of the rust which surprisingly got rid of most of it, then let it sit in a vinegar solution for a week, rotating it.
Then today I rinsed it out, treated with baking powdered to neutralize the acid, washed it out with some gas, then coated it with some oil, then drained everything and blew it out with the wife's hair dryer for an hour. I'll rinse it out tomorrow one last time with more gas then install.
I also blew out all the lines with compressed air.
It's not perfect but a huge improvement. I'll run 2 in line fuel filters for a while and keep an eye on it.

ValleVidal is a must do Jim. Absolute solitude back there. If you guys go back to Cimarron I reccomend the resteraunt in the historic and haunted St James. The food is worth the stop but the history of the place is really cool.

The 4WD on my '62 has been perplexing me for a long time and I finally decided to put in the research and leg work to attempt to mitigate the situation. Thanks to the half dozen great threads on 4WD troubleshooting here on Mud, an excellent video by Powermodz on Youtube, and the handy dandy FSM I found the root of the problem in the very dirty, and mud/rust-caked Aisin Free Wheel Hubs. Once removed, cleaned, polished, and reassembled my truck is again capable of what these machines are known for.

We're still settling in here but are making some recon day trips in the area.

Many thanks for the St James recommendation. We will be going back thru Cimarron and will give it a try. I have seen good reports re the food at a road house called simply "Cold Beer" north of Cimarron on Hwy 64 out in the middle of nowhere.

From what I've read Valle Vidal is a place we could spend a lot of time. Appears the Enchanted Loop Scenic Byway in general is worth some time.

Keep us in the loop for the 2nd SAS.

If you get up around Raton, give us a shout.

First real cold spell (low 40s and rainy) hit Alabama a few weeks ago the temp of the 2F in FJ60 was hovering around 160F with the heater on. Ordered a new 88C t-stat and gaskets from @beno. Finally got around to dropping in the parts today. Discovered the old o-ring that sits atop the t-stat was degraded, that would explain the lack of retaining engine heat in the cooler temps. Also found the interior of the upper housing had a bunch of crud in it. Cleaned that out. Engine temps with the new 88C t-stat, etc. is now sitting nice and warm at about 195F.

Starting last Thursday, logged 1675 miles on the OD (1929 real miles with 33's). The Sixty did real well with gas mileage ranging from 10.8 on I-70 to 14.93 mpg on slower roads and mountain passes. Had three issues First one was the turn signal was slow to cancel. I was thinking how awesome it is to drive a 30 year old truck with that being its biggest issue. Then noticed a cold air leak from the heater that goes away when switched to recirculate. Wasn't an issue unless you are riding shotgun. Whiteout conditions, I-70 being closed due to multiple accidents we ended up driving through South Park. The Bastards killed Kenny!! We trudged through the blowing snow until we arrived at beautiful Crestone Colorado in the dark. Woke up early on Christmas Eve to help my friend move, got to use my TT roof rack! That's when problem 3 showed up..
I noticed the front diff and drive shaft covered in oil!! Check the dipstick and nothing. Still had good pressure at the gauge, but decided to walk to town to see the store was closed, talked the owner into opening up to sell me his last 2.5 gallons of motor oil. Found the leak! That bolt under the oil filter, behind the pressure sending unit was nearly gushing. Got the factory tool kit out and the damned thing was tight.. WTH? So I removed it and tightened it back up and problem solved, but still don't understand how or why but drove on back to Moab in time to beat Santa.

When I refurbed two of my flaps, one snugged up to the body and one did not. The difference was when I was mounting them. On the one that was tight, I held it tight to the body while I tightened the three screws. On the other one, I did not put as much lateral pressure on it while tightening the screws, and it had a gap like you described. I am waiting to get some of the adhesive described above to secure that lip to the body as well as apply that necessary lateral pressure.

I believe that's Crestone Peak in the third photo, with Crestone Needle to the right and behind. After we traversed from Crestone Needle and summited Crestone Peak, one of my climbing partners looked off into the distance at Alamosa far below, and commented how nice it would be to have a green chile cheeseburger with tater tots (covered with cheese BTW). That was pretty cruel seeing as how Alamosa was at least 7 or 8 hours away, and we were really hungry at the time.

BTW, the guy on the left of the photo (not with our group) downclimbed the steep north face of Crestone Needle in sandals. We opted for a single-pitch rappel.

And for technical content, we did drive up to the South Colony Lakes trailhead in my basically stock '84 FJ60. It's amazing where you can take a stock FJ60.
