Always makes me think something else is wearing out in order to make the seal leak.

I.E. pinion bearing. Probably one of the very few things I’ve never touched on an LC.
Also a possibility of a plugged breather causing a slight pressure build-up, causing seals to weep. At 40+ years though, I’d lean more towards a seal/bearing replacement.

I paid Georg to do mine... just don’t build it with a crush sleeve; use a solid spacer and some shims

My front seal gave up while trying to keep up with J Mack and Evan out of Tuweep. Doing 70+ on that dirt road when I didnt properly take it out of 4hi.

Finally unloaded the ‘69 I got back in Dec of ‘18. With Coyote and this one, I should be able to have enough pieces and parts to finish AuPig.

Do you have an 80 and 200 to complete the North American set?

Yes, do a thread! I’m gonna be doing this soon too, so it’ll be good to be refreshed.
I will, just need an hour to start with it organized :)
You should be able to take off the pinion nut and yoke then pull out the seal and replace. Make sure you torque the nut to correct ft/lbs. Always makes me think something else is wearing out in order to make the seal leak. A seal is cheap enough to try first.
right, I really don’t want open the front up once I finally get it together.
Yes, you have to set the proper bearing pre-load, done with the fun stack o' shims...
which I think I’ll get done by a pro, I’ve never set up gears before.

Thanks for the advice gents

About as easy as it gets and lots of reading material out here on the webs for setting up a Toyota Diff.
If you are only changing out the seal and don't plan to remove the ring gear there is a good chance that once you get the backlash set your pattern will be good.

If you are just replacing the seal, you are not setting up gears. You just need to get your pinion pre-load correct.

Did not exactly do anything to the Pig, but I think Pig Lovers would appreciate this...

Big Boy, the largest steam locomotive ever produced rolls again!

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, in Ogden, Utah.

We went up and saw the Big Boy roll through WY last weekend, she is beautiful. Not sure whey she is named "Big Boy", she is clearly a woman.

At 1,200,000 pounds, pure Heavy Metal!

Steam engines are big dinosoars from an age gone by...not much different than our pigs imho. I know lots of gear heads that love trains too. 🍺

@PabloCruise advise is sound, one banana to change the seal and you do not have to worry about pre-load. Just pull nut, replace, and re-torque to spec and stake. Done dozens of these on various cruisers ;)

Just to be clear, I would worry about pre-load when replacing the seal. In my case, I replaced the seal, torqued the flange and then messed up my pinion bearing b/c my shims had spun. Since the shims were messed up, simply torquing the flange nut resulted in the wrong bearing pre-load.
Had the shims been in good shape, I would have been fine.
However, a lot of times, the seal starts leaking because the pre-load is no longer in spec...

Just my $0.02 after all that fun with the 40.

I did something similar. Took my nut off. Replaced flange/seal. The pinion sank into the 3rd a little. I put the nut back on. The pinion must have stuck because I tightened it good. Staked the nut.

Backed off ramps and snap.

It was bound up and it snapped the tip off
My pinion.

Bad.
