That is a good question. Maybe Mark A. can shed some light? In a previous thread I had asked questions regarding mating a H55 w/ an F engine, and Fast Eddy suggested "5-on-the tree". How would that be, I thought. Some said "crazy talk", but is it? If there is full range of motion in the gear pattern with a four speed, the five speed may just be able to work under the same theory, no? Mark, please help us put an end to this question.Brendon

Brendon, the range of motion is not the issue; that can be handled with a few simple modifications to the stock 3 speed top cover, which is what I did with the 4 on the tree.

The issue becomes the fact that the one-piece top cover of the 5 speed has an integrated shift tower AND a shift rod coming out the back of the cover for 5th gear. This leaves two choices. Either a new top cover would have to be cast from scratch to swap the shift forks and rails into, or the top of an exisiting cover would have to be milled off in order to determine what it would take to graft on the 3 speed cover.

I am open to milling down a 5 speed cover to explore this if someone has an extra cover to spare.

It is also worthy of note that the 5 speed cover is already very tall, and adding column shift linkage to it would make floorpan clearance even more tricky.

Similar part also used for H4x equipped trucks.

I had a chance to look at a 5spd top cover last week. I do think the milling option is doable. Based on the rough measurements I took, the finished height would be close to the level at the bottom of a stock front heater in a 40. Obviously, the tunnel cover would need to be extensively modified.

Oh... I would be super interested in a 5 speed colmum shifter! That would be insanely cool. I miss the colmum shifter the most about having a built vs stock cruiser. Buying a 5 speed this week and would be very, very excited if I could have it old school and have overdrive.
