Looking at all those wires makes my head ACHE!
I HATE WIRING!
Good for you Philos1!
Is the dog in the back ground guarding your rig?

Chicago

looking good man. ill be doing this swaw once my 2f dies. you are moving really fast too.

on a side not did u find out what kinda car was in the garage under the cover yet? im still guessing a 3000GT

thanks guys!

chicago- that's Zero, my cattle-dog, mostly he sleeps on the lawn and scares the mail carriers- although he's a total nice guy, just looks kinda mean to some people
I guess...

cruisnfj60- It's def a nissan, just an old wrecked P.O.S. 240sx or something he was going to work on...I think he was thinking some kinda rice sleeper, but I dunno, he's been out of town for months helping his kid work on his house in Colo spgs.

Cali- yeah this rain f-ing sucks- I'd probably be a week further ahead if I didn't have to keep stopping work to cover everything up....

started buying belts and hoses this week, so It's not too far off now!!!

Philos,

Did you plan on running dual exhaust or single? Are the fuel lines going to be to close to the exhaust? She's coming along though. Where are you mounting your ECU?

I'll probably mount the ECM on the PS fenderwell- we'll see how it goes when I get the fenders on...
Exhaust will be dual 2 1/4" with two cats, then into a single 3" flowmaster, then 3" out, four O2 sensors.
fuel lines are going to be factory lines to the PS frame- bent and tweaked to fit.

still waiting on a few more parts before it'll be ready, getting close though.

Philos1,

does your V-8 have a lifiting hook or other device mounted to the passenger cylinder head on the rear for lifting / removal purposes?

on mine, there is one on the divers side at the front , but nothing at the rear on the RH side. I'm wondering is the prior owners kept that or maybe they don't have a good lifiting point. I used a bolt in the cylinder head to place the engine on a dolly.

nothing on the rear, I used bolts in the cylinder head too.- this means you're getting started?

not to spoil the fun. I know milage is not a popular topic around here, and no I don't want to buy a honda. But I just have to ask. Do you think your milage will go up or down. I have herd many times in the jeep world that when replacing the six with a fuel injected V8 milage increases a considerable amount. be shure to let us know.

Manuchao came out today and helped me get the doghouse back on as well as the hood.

I got my ram's horns bolted all the way on, got my toyota water temp sending unit mounted, started the install on the gas-shock hood opening mod (see FAQ), figured out a few other small things as well.

COOL TIP!- on the vortec motors, you don't need the bushings and adapters that Marks sends to use the toyota sending units (oil pressure and water temp). the toyota water sender fits in the chevy passenger side where the factory chevy one is (it's metric now.) a little RTV and it was good to go. also, a bushing can be used to fit the toyota oil pressure sender into the plugged hole just above the oil filter. I'll get pics this week if I remember. the vortec keeps it's original sending units for functionality, and the toyota gauges work too!

I forget who, but someone wanted a pic of clearance between the front of the motor and the radiator- pic below is obvioulsy without fan and radiator, but you get the idea- should be about an inch left or so after all is bolted up:) there's about 11" or so right now...

I also whacked the s*** out of my head on one of my leaf springs climbing around under the front end, got lots of pesky blood out and gave me a throbbing reminder of who's boss.

I told Manuchao that I would blame him in some wild story about trying to steal my motor and dog....head hurts too much to think that much right now:D :D :D Thanks again for all your help today man!!!!!!!!!!! very much appreciated:beer:

purple- mileage should definately increase with the injection, etc. I'll post some figures when I get there.

pics below, enjoy.

Hey Philos,

It's looking good. I will probably stop by on Sunday to check up on you ;). Manuchao is a cool dude, I am glad he was able to help you out. You are in the home stretch keep it up. We could do V8J60 drags when your done to compare the TPI/turbo 400 to the Vortec/H55 ;p.

Talk to ya soon

sounds like a plan... you'd probably win the drags though, the H-55 isn't exactly a short-throw shifting tranny.

Manuchao wants to do this swap or a toyota V8, so we could have our own V8J60 BAJA 1000 instead:D :D :D

I'll let ya know when I'll be over there so we can meet up.

Hey Philos1, how's the headache bro?:mad::mad:
Hope all is well.
I want ZERO !! That's one cool dog eh..!!:cool::cool:
I see you installed the struts for the hood..how did all work out..how far forward did drill the holes?
Does it touch the front wiper arm at all ?:confused:
Let me know...
I might go the same route.

Hell yeah on a Tundra V8....
Im looking for a complete engine.
I'll bug yah guys when I find one..

Dynosoar, how yah doing mon !!
Im sorry I havent been able to drop by to get them seat welded.....
I'll be cool to get together and line up Philos1 street with fj60's.
Let me know if you need help ( I doubt it.)
Oh yeah dont forget to wave when you fly by on the freeway

Later bros :beer::beer::beer:

hey frank! head actually hurts more today....at least it's not bleeding :D

peter's planning on comming by on sunday, so that might be good.

I mounted the hood shocks about an inch forward of the small threaded hole and about an inch and 1/2 down from the larger one where you mounted yours. clears the wiper and works a charm...

In other news, found some more stuff from the junkyard today- fan/clutch, charcoal canister, and PS pump.

K&N intake DOES NOT FIT!!!! so anyone thinking about it on this particular combo- fuggedaboutit.... too tall for hood clearance, I'm gonna make my own from OE stuff and some thin-wall 4" tubing.

no pics today guys/gals.... sorry.

looks very nice. My compliments. I am a little intrested in how you wired that inline fuel pump you posted a pic of a page or so back. How was the fuel system set up before you converted? Pump in the tank?

I have a 60, so fuel pump was on the block... I just cut the hard line on the frame, took out some of the rubber line, then inserted the pump and filter with high pressure rubber line (filter before pump)- I'll put another filter near the new motor as well. wiring just comes from the new harness.:)

as promised, pics...in no particular order...

toyota oil pressure switch mounted above oil filter using a 1/4" to 1/8" bushing.
hood shock mounting location so that hood clears wiper arm.

and a little question with having two purge connections? any ideas which one goes to purge switch on manifold versus purge switch on the canister? the harness has two different styles, but the pigtails on the canister and manifold purge are the same...

all in all, it's getting a little closer every day.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

nothing on the rear, I used bolts in the cylinder head too.- this means you're getting started?

not yet. I've got the engine (99 Vortec engine assembly) out of a youkon. I talked with the guy who's going to help me with the motor mounts (fabricator type) and he's on board.

I've yet to buy the adapter kit, and the the wiring harness. Planning
on this summer.

May remove the engine in the next month or two and plan out how I want to run the fuel lines. I want to stay away from rubber hose where possible.

Do you think a bare block with the rams horn manifolds installed would be a good mock-up tool in place or having to deal with the complete engine assembly, for the purposes of locating and setting up the motor mounts from the Mark's kit. My buddy who is helping has a couple of old 350 blocks that would seem to be a lot easier to
work with.

Hey there Elbert, I'd wait til you have everything you think you'll need- it will mean less trips for stuff that you've forgotten. you can use the short block as a mock up, but using the vortec was easy enough for me...

as for my progress, I got some more wiring done, got a little more plumbing done. getting a little bit closer every day.

I was able to get some pipe fittings and weld up the stock EGR/AIR tubes that came with the vortec. I have some 3/8" female to 1/4" male NPT fittings that will allow the stock tubes to fit in the ram's horn manifolds and still look close to factory.

other pic is of my new swiveling water neck for the T-stat.

hopefully I can get it all to the muffler shop late this week for the last of the swap!

pics below.

I noticed this site had some kind of fitting for the EGR pipes and other stuff oriented towards GM engine swaps.
http://www.btbprod.com/
hard to tell from the pics on that web site
