Ok finally got around to adjusting the valves (none were very far out) and doing a compression check, and my fears were true.

Here are my compression numbers:

1. 125
2. 60
3. 0
4. 140
5. 150
6. 130

I poured a teaspoon of oil in #2 and #3 and the numbers didn’t change so that indicates problem with valves or a damaged piston is what I read. So I’m thinking the next step is to take the head off and take it to a machine shop and see what we have. Not sure which way we are going to go yet. Not wanting to $pend big bucks on rebuilding a 2F. There is a 2F in town on marketplace for $600 but he doesn’t have any compression numbers so probably another can of worms…

Been tossing around the Isuzu diesel idea but I only have one lead on a bell housing, and the engine will also need work to get it running properly.

Or my ‘72 40 project has a good running 305 in it. So thought about stealing it and putting it in the pig. I wanted a Toyota engine in it anyway.

Need to make a decision to get this pig on the trail!

Take the head to a machinist and get it fixed right.
If you convince him it's for a tractor (not a lie) it may only cost you a few hundred bucks for a valve job.
Inspect the bottom end, throw a head gasket in it and be wheeling next weekend...

@trainbufftony I was hoping that it was going to be that easy. I pulled the head today hoping for a valve issue and found that cylinder 3 is scored. I poured oil in number 3 and 4 and 3 drained into the crankcase almost immediately. 4 held the oil. Have to make a decision on rebuild this 2F or go with a something else.

So I’ve been punching numbers and I’m seeking advice. Let me know if I’m way off on these scenarios and numbers! I’d be doing all the fabrication and assembly work but of course would farm out the machine work.

My Isuzu 4bd2t conversion with nv4500 would be around $6000
Bellhousing and flywheel are $1000
Big expense is the nv4500. They look to be $2600-$3000

I have a 2h in my HJ45. There is one in the classifieds for $3000 Not sure I want to do that again. Looks to be $4,600 for engine and everything I’d need.

2uz like @TachedOutOffRoad did maybe $7,000-$8000 engine and bellhousing transmission, tcase, clutch etc? Maybe more like $10,000?

Rebuild this 2f
Domed pistons from Jim C $1200
Machine work for head and block $2000???
Gasket kit $500
Cam and main bearings $150
$3,850 (please let me know if I’m way off!)
I don’t think I’m going willing to spend $6,000-$10,000 on an old 2f. Even though it would drop right in with no fabrication and I enjoy the simplicity.

Used 2f here in town $600 owner doesn’t have compression numbers. Oil pan is off. Might be a can of worms. He said it’s been sitting awhile but ran in his ‘76 40 before he swapped for a v8. I thought about asking him if he could put oil pan back on fill with oil. I’d bring oil, my compression gauge, good charged battery and some jumper cables to see if we could get numbers.

Lastly pulling my Chevy 305 out of my ‘72 40. I never really like Chevys in cruisers but it’s an option. But then I’d have to have a plan for another engine for it when I sell it. So even more work for me and expense in the long run. Probably not the best option. But 305 to Toyota 4 speed maybe $800 for the kit and new driveshaft $1000? Or just use the 3 speed transmission it has a switch everything over so would just need new driveshafts?

Anyway seeking advice please let me know what y’all are thinking and if my numbers are way off!

Got new tires so need to get this done!

What do you ultimately plan on doing with Tippy? Any kind of long term ideas or just run it and wheel?

If you have no long term goal for it and you want it running as quickly as possible, source another 2F, or get yours rebuilt.

If you want the diesel or some other power plant, there’s a lot more time involved besides just the money, and your dollar estimates don’t include thousands more in unforeseen parts and details.

Worth noting is that every time I've rebuilt/ refreshed an old Toyota (or any other brand) engine, the vehicle, once put back together, has significantly more power and it's most noticeable in the low rpms where it grabs you by the seat of your pants and trots out into the intersection with less gas pedal input. If you're convinced that you need a little more power it could be that you really just need your stock amount of power back...
I myself am not old enough to remember how 72 landcruisers ran new. So my engine is probably even more worn out than I realize and I'm probably not alone in that set of circumstances...
A freshen-up is probably all you need and it's certainly the most economical choice and will preserve the Resale value if your pig should that ever become an issue...

Thanks guys! Long term plans for tippy is wheel it and give it to my youngest son to drive around town on back roads to school etc. Depending on how we like it and it drives maybe extended camping trips. I have 2 of these Isuzu diesels so been wanting to do something with them. So right now leaning towards the Isuzu diesel but the 2f is close 2nd.

I bought a wrecked LX470 and sold parts so engine was “free”
Bellhousing/ clutch/ flywheel/ etc $3000
Brand new transmission was $1500
Cases $150
Dual adapter and 23 spline parts $900

I love my manual trans/ 2UZ so much. So much. I would do it 100 times again.
Just needs to climb pebbles better 😳😲🤪😘🤣🤣🤣

Does the red 40 have a running engine? There may be options there as well if it's running and goals for each rig are cross compatible.

I have a 40 and a 55, both were nearly identical powertrain wise. It was nice (like parts, less inventory) but short lived as the 55's 1F spun a bearing. I decided to buy a worn 2F and have it rebuilt by a shop (not cost effective at all but time is a commodity I don't have). If I were to do it all over again, given I'm not wheeling, I would probably have sourced a known running 2F with good compression and called it a day. Obtaining parts for the 2F was a challenge but it was a lot of fun! OS pistons at the time were difficult, and but the rocker shaft/assembly was a bottleneck. The rocker shaft alluded me for about a month or two until I scored a used 3F rocker set-up, which is quieter and has better metallurgy.

Anyway, a lot to think about...a diesel would be sweet...my apologies for the thread hack.

Good advice @MudDauber

The 40 does have a running 2F and sentimental. My dad and I rebuilt it together about 22 years ago. It runs good but leaks oil like crazy. First and only engine I’ve ever rebuilt. I’m still tossing around the 2F rebuild or the diesel. I think the diesel would be cool. But if I don’t get on it may never get done. I’ve found the adapters from a mud member slightly cheaper.

I do have another 2F here with a missing head that doesn’t appear to have any scores in the cylinders but they do have surface rust. Thought I’d open up the oil pan and see what I got. It came in a junk cruiser I bought so I thought about honing the cylinders and oiling good putting this current head on it and seeing what compression numbers I can get.

Decisions🤦🏻‍♂️

Not sure what it is about #3 cylinders around here. I went to my junk cruiser and did the same oil check. #3 drains the oil after about 3 days. All the others hold the oil good. So my plan is to rebuild the best block of the 2 and the head. Hopefully one block can be machined down to 40 over and we will start over. It will be a good project for my son and I.
