After valves and compression test, set the idle, mix and timing.View attachment 3834674
We ran it for the longest time today for the first time. Smoked a little more than I would like. We chased down some oil leaks. It doesn’t have the power I think it should have. We were watching the temperature with a laser temperature gauge since the gauges don’t work yet. It’s got a 2f from a friend’s pig that wasn’t quite right and over heated once that I remember. I put a new head gasket on it. So we will see. Engine sounds good. I’m going to adjust the valves and then do a compression test and see what we have.
35" tires are not going to simply jump into action via an F motor. You'll probably have to give it some juice to get rolling in high range.Sounds good @PabloCruise ! Will definitely check all that. Engine sounds really good. Starts right up on choke cold like first try. Revs good, smooth, no misses or stumbling. It just kinda feels like it’s running on 4 cylinders or something compared to my 40 with a stock 2f. I hope valves or what you listed and not something major. It’s got 35” tires and a welded rear diff. Currently the gas has to really be mashed to the floor to get it to start rolling or it will die. We just drove it around out in the pasture. Sounds great but something seems off. Thanks for the reminder to check timing and tune carb. I’ll check vacuum leaks too.

What year NPR truck? Potentially a very awesome swap!I have 2 Isuzu diesel engines that came out of those Isuzu npr box trucks and mate it to an nv4500.
One thing that helped my 2F was advancing the timing quite a bit past the 7* the FSM calls for. How much to advance it really depends on the condition of the engine, your altitude and gas and probably other stuff too. I timed mine by manifold vacuum mostly to see how much advance I could give it then by ears listening for pinging to see how much I had to retard to make it driveable.Right now our plan is to see if it’s some simple fix.
a stock '76 dizzy just might be a vacuum retard dizzy. If so, cap off that vacuum line and run it with just the mechanical advance.I have a stock ‘76 distributor.

Paging @LaughingjackalRight now our plan is to see if it’s some simple fix. If we get the 2F sorted we are going to re gear and go 37” tires. If it turns out that it’s something major I have 2 Isuzu diesel engines that came out of those Isuzu npr box trucks and mate it to an nv4500. That was the long term goal so that plan will speed up if we don’t want to throw $$ at the 2F.
I will say this, I have watched @Laughingjackal spend considerable time to get his 4BD1T swap working well in his 60.Awesome! Looking forward to this! I loved everything about that Isuzu diesel swap. It pairs perfectly with Landcruisers.
Yep, set the timing for max vacuum, adjust the idle back down to spec, then set idle mix to max vacuum, and then see if timing still brings max vacuum. One thing that helped my 2F was advancing the timing quite a bit past the 7* the FSM calls for. How much to advance it really depends on the condition of the engine, your altitude and gas and probably other stuff too. I timed mine by manifold vacuum mostly to see how much advance I could give it then by ears listening for pinging to see how much I had to retard to make it driveable.
What distributor are you running?
I was able to turn 35s with stock gears but had to re-gear (4.88s) to turn 37s.
Yes, slow down, and get back to the basics. Thanks @Pighead ! I have a stock ‘76 distributor. I’ll fool around with the timing. I’m curious to see what the compression test shows after a valve adjustment and I’ll work down the list. We were hoping the 2F would run good enough for around town and back roads until we figured out our plan with the Isuzu diesel and acquired parts and built it. This engine came out of @dogfishlake ‘76 pig. When I bought that pig out of Huntsville AL it was extremely hard to start and was under powered. I was hoping a head gasket might fix some of that. I might have gotten ahead of myself. I rebuilt the carb, changed the plugs but haven’t done much else. I really just need to slow down and really inspect everything.
What part(s) of the swap were giving him issues?I will say this, I have watched @Laughingjackal spend considerable time to get his 4BD1T swap working well in his 60.
