We ran it for the longest time today for the first time. Smoked a little more than I would like. We chased down some oil leaks. It doesn’t have the power I think it should have. We were watching the temperature with a laser temperature gauge since the gauges don’t work yet. It’s got a 2f from a friend’s pig that wasn’t quite right and over heated once that I remember. I put a new head gasket on it. So we will see. Engine sounds good. I’m going to adjust the valves and then do a compression test and see what we have.
After valves and compression test, set the idle, mix and timing.
See Lean Drop Method.
Getting the timing set makes a big difference...

Sounds good @PabloCruise ! Will definitely check all that. Engine sounds really good. Starts right up on choke cold like first try. Revs good, smooth, no misses or stumbling. It just kinda feels like it’s running on 4 cylinders or something compared to my 40 with a stock 2f. I hope valves or what you listed and not something major. It’s got 35” tires and a welded rear diff. Currently the gas has to really be mashed to the floor to get it to start rolling or it will die. We just drove it around out in the pasture. Sounds great but something seems off. Thanks for the reminder to check timing and tune carb. I’ll check vacuum leaks too.

35" tires are not going to simply jump into action via an F motor. You'll probably have to give it some juice to get rolling in high range.

Hi range is not where Landcruisers are meant to be operated. In my opinion the whole vehicle was designed around it's low speed crawly torque. If you still need to goose it in 4lo, something is definitely wrong.
My 22RE Definitely makes more power than my F motor, but power isn't what you need to turn 4 oversize tires, torque is, the F motor has the torque, but you'll probably want to stuff it in lo range and leave it there.

Yeah it’s a 2f with a 4 speed. Identical to my fj40 but the fj40 has 31” tires. If you take a tape measure to the worn out pig tires (absolutely no tread) they measure in at 32.5”. While my 31s measure in at 29.5”. Maybe I’m dreaming but I’ve been driving my fj40 since 2000 and seems like the pig is lacking power significantly. Maybe its tires just didn’t think 3” would make that much difference. Thanks for the help @trainbufftony i need all I can get!!!

Right now our plan is to see if it’s some simple fix. If we get the 2F sorted we are going to re gear and go 37” tires. If it turns out that it’s something major I have 2 Isuzu diesel engines that came out of those Isuzu npr box trucks and mate it to an nv4500. That was the long term goal so that plan will speed up if we don’t want to throw $$ at the 2F.

What year NPR truck? Potentially a very awesome swap!👍🏼
Here’s a link to a thread where a guy here did that in 2007.
He sold the rig about 5 years afterwards 😕

Hey @RUSH55 yeah I have messaged rhino about his swap. Mine are a 4bd2t out of a 1994 truck. I hadn’t actually seen rhinos thread tho. Thanks for posting that. A guy named longbow on here did one in an fj40 and his fj60. His builds were pretty cool he rebuilt the Isuzu engine and replaced each cylinder liner. He mated both to the automatic transmission in a fj62. He made his own adapter ring and rebuilt the automatics himself. he loved it behind the Isuzu. I was going to follow his build but decided we want a manual. All the adapters aren’t made anymore that people have used that I’m aware of that mate the h55f. Longbow’s was a pretty simple design. I found a place in Canada that has an adapter for the nv4500.

One thing that helped my 2F was advancing the timing quite a bit past the 7* the FSM calls for. How much to advance it really depends on the condition of the engine, your altitude and gas and probably other stuff too. I timed mine by manifold vacuum mostly to see how much advance I could give it then by ears listening for pinging to see how much I had to retard to make it driveable.
What distributor are you running?
I was able to turn 35s with stock gears but had to re-gear (4.88s) to turn 37s.

Thanks @Pighead ! I have a stock ‘76 distributor. I’ll fool around with the timing. I’m curious to see what the compression test shows after a valve adjustment and I’ll work down the list. We were hoping the 2F would run good enough for around town and back roads until we figured out our plan with the Isuzu diesel and acquired parts and built it. This engine came out of @dogfishlake ‘76 pig. When I bought that pig out of Huntsville AL it was extremely hard to start and was under powered. I was hoping a head gasket might fix some of that. I might have gotten ahead of myself. I rebuilt the carb, changed the plugs but haven’t done much else. I really just need to slow down and really inspect everything.

Don't forget, I would be all about buying that 2f from you if it doesn't work out. Souiee would love to be reunited with it's original engine!

That said, the 2f in it (you sold it to me with) is great!

a stock '76 dizzy just might be a vacuum retard dizzy. If so, cap off that vacuum line and run it with just the mechanical advance.

Something doesn't sound right.

I am running 33x12.5s w/ my 2F in my 40. I can get her rolling just by letting out the clutch patiently.

Paging @Laughingjackal

Awesome! Looking forward to this! I loved everything about that Isuzu diesel swap. It pairs perfectly with Landcruisers.
I will say this, I have watched @Laughingjackal spend considerable time to get his 4BD1T swap working well in his 60.

Yep, set the timing for max vacuum, adjust the idle back down to spec, then set idle mix to max vacuum, and then see if timing still brings max vacuum.

If not, repeat the process.

Yes, slow down, and get back to the basics.

There is no substitute for doing the work...
