welding help anybody?

https://forum.ih8mud.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=618645&stc=1&d=1333723525
Hey Scrappdaddy,
I looked up how you welded in your tubing on the back frame, but my welding skills are a bite weak, and I couldn't rightly tell how you did it. When you cut the tubing that you used on the back did you cut them flush and then weld and grind smooth, or did you cut them to be a little bit shorter to "catch" the weld.

It looks as though you drilled both sides of the frame to the outside diameter of the tubing. Could one drill the outside wall the size of the OD of the tube and then it would just butt up to the inside of the inside frame wall which had only a hole the size of the inside diameter? Or is it best to have the welding on both sides of the frame?

xtiaan2000, Don't Butt weld recess the tubing slightly on both sides of frame. You are also adding a fish plate correct is it on both sides, if it is recess below fishplates. You will get better penetration and more strength. Will be easier to grind also.

Thanks Bob.

Xtiaan,

I'm not an expert at anything, so listen to me at your own risk. :)

I cut the tubing to FULL length, then bevel the edges, so you get good penetration of the weld. Grind flush.

You want the tubing to go through the frame and all fish plates.

Good penetration = the right heat, don't be afraid to turn it up.

Edit.... Better listen to Bob!

Taking it slow. Don't wanna mess this up.

From what you guys see is this a good position for the box. I imagine that the pitman arm will suck up a bit when it gets tightened on. Which will adjust the draglink side too.

heat, slow welds, if you don't hear bacon, it ain't makin...draw a dime and stop move to the other side, draw a dime and stop. go back to the first dime and lay one over half of the top of the first dime, stop. lay another half way over the top of the second one, work your way around the tube. it takes forever and I don't have that kind of discipline most of the time, but when I do, it has a real nice effect. heck you won't even want to grind any off;)just like drawing with a molten piece of metal wire. trick isn't so much to fill the void, but more to melt the 2 pieces and drag them together...lot of wire feeders tend to think a filled weld is a good weld; but it's all about penetration. you got this.

Still moving slowly. I think I have the box in the right place.
-There is about an inch and an eight between the top front end of the pitman arm and the frame.
-The drag link looks like it is maybe an inch forward from where it usually connects to the pitman.
-The box has a bit of tilt on it but it clears with good access to all the bolts.

I'm about ready to drill my holes... I think.

I am perplexed why the guys at 4x4Labs sent me one frame plate that had holes big enough for the sleeves while the other side only accommodates the bolt hole:hmm:.

My plan of attack is to cut and drill out the the inside plate so I can use it like Pighead did adding that forward support beam.

Xtiaan,

I seen that the holes were smaller on the one plate, also. I'm not sure what they are thinking. Maybe give them a call, then drill them out.

Thanks so much for all the help! I hate to ask so many questions.

What you think, with the limited amount of info that I have given you, about the position of the box?

I think that the guys at the shop are out for the day, but I will post with their answer when I get it.

Xtiaan,

I can't help too much, I used a 60 box, but if tierods don't bind or hit anything, you should be alright. No issues on the inside of frame?

With my 60 box and a 5.3 chevy, they came very close on both sides.

Before you weld, just check everything over good.

.

in full swing, does the drag link end clear the frame? if so, i see no issues. of course i'm drunk, so that may not mean much ;)

Just about exactly what mine measures...

questions endless

The one with 60 knuckles also has power steering and 4x4 Labs arms...

I thinks that I am going to use 4x4labs for my draglink. Pighead did you have them make your draglink? Boy, I wonder how long your draglink is?

I used the 60 knuckles as well. Did you use the saginaw ends and bore out your tie rod connection, or did you do the 55 end on the passenger side and the saginaw on the driverside?

not getting it done

Okay I am actually starting to get some stuff done. I was delayed at least a month by waiting for some particular parts. :frown: Now my partner has gone to Alaska for seven days so I am delayed again, but I have gotten some good stuff done. I will post some pics soon.

Right now I am trying to tackle the steering column and hoses. Gonzo is out there again helping me out! Do these pics help? Thanks

Anyone out there have some pics of how they did the column modification?
