@ woytovich, its not that close, about 2 - 3 inches away.

Will you be able to get the pan off without pulling the exhaust?

And won't that add a LOT of heat to the oil? The exhaust pipe will be very hot...

UNBELIEVABLE....great thread/build/idea. I like stock cruisers and preservation, but if you are going outside TOY specs THIS is the way to do it.....AWESOME

I just looked at the entire thread for the first time. Very nice work! keep it up and thanks for sharing the build and the pictures. I like the way you are doing your own thing and not performing a cookie cutter build. Looking forward to seeing more.

I did notice a coule of things with the leaf you added to the rear springs. See pics below.

I also wanted to ask abont the material you used for the spring cushions. You menioned it was rubber. Do you think this material will be firm enough to keep the u-bolts from loosening up?

I'll be interested to know how it works out once you get some mile son the cruiser.

Fellow IH8muders, thanks a bunch for all your inspirationally comments!

@ woytovich, not sure if I can get the oil pan off without taking the exhaust off. It will be close. I did make my exhaust in three pieces so removal will be easily if needed. Regarding the heat, I’m really not worried about it. The stock crossover pipe was closer than mine.

@ miker, Good call! I was a little worried about that when I made the add a leafs but this is my reasoning. Yes you are correct that having two leaves ending at the same point will cause added stress on the leaf above and that could cause the above leaf to break. I think I would have to be doing some serious rock crawling for a long time for that to happen start to happen. I might shorten it a few inches if I see and signs a fatigue on the upper leaf.

Regarding the shear stress on the spring pin and the leaf butting up against the clamp; well my theory is that the U-bolts clamp the springs so tight that I would be amazed if the leafs ever moved. Also in the spring design, the one leaf that is butting up against the clamp should never touch the clamp in motion. When the spring flexes the clamp should move more than the shorter spring that is butted up against it, due to the arch of the spring. If the spring ever becomes a negative arch then I am in trouble. If the happens, that clamp is the least of my worries.

The rubber I used is very tuff and it has fibers inside for added strength. I do feel it is firm enough but only time will tell.

Thank you, you bring up some very valid points. I have never done anything like this before and I know that there might need to be some changes made to this setup. I greatly appreciate your thoughts and thank you for taking the time to read my thread.

Day 64

I finished up the supply and return fuel lines and placed a filter in line on the supply line. These lines were a pain to manipulate but at the end it came out pretty good.

The only thing left for me to do on the frame is the 2/4 and low/high linkage. Anybody have any good ideas? I looking to do some type of cable system. I don’t want anything on the transmission cover. I was thing of adapting two stock levers.

Have a look at advance adapters. They sell a twin stick. I'm sure you could make something similar.

If you do decide to buy this one, I'd recommend contacting orangefj45.

nice

well at first I thought wow nice shape as it sits

quality work, keep posting

Super clean for sure. Watching and drooling.

@ miker, thanks for suggesting the AA twin stick. This is a great idea and I have been looking at this for some time now. I really would like to do some type of cable system or electronic solenoid system. I really do not want anything on my transmission cover sticking up. I would like to put two leavers under my dash. I know some stock FJs have this as a feature.

Has anybody installed one or know when I could pick up the parts for a reasonable price?

This is great! But I have to say that you have more in your frame and running gear than I have in my whole Fj40 haa haa! No joke either! Nice shop too! I trip over at least 50 things a day and cuss all of them and I put them there Oooppsss! :) Can't wait to see your finished ride. GREAT WORK!!!!!
