The sound deadener stuff really makes a difference... I'd recommend doing your doors. (But dont do what I did and do the very top strip, or go as close to the panel clips...leave another inch surround. I didnt figure that out til I tried to mount the door panel)

I used kil mat on my doors. Similar to fat mat...one of the cheap alternatives to the real stuff and I'm quite impressed.

As seen I pretty much did full coverage on the outer skin and on the inner skin. Then did 1/2 coverage on the outside of the inner skin.

I went from no door panels/no sound deadening/no carpet/no weatherstrip/open trans tunnel with extra cut out for duals....basically 2 seats and a dash board in.... truck was like the inside of a 50 gallon drum at highway speeds. Couldnt hold a conversation.

Added weatherstrip. Weathersrip alone probably quieted it down by 100%.
Put in a 85% sealed off trans tunnel. Probably quieted it down another 100%
Added all the kilmat to the doors, quieted it down another 100%.
Took plastic sheet and tuck taped all the ports shut in the doors.(didnt want to fool around with that 3m ribbon sealer stuff) and the truck got another 25% quieter.

Can fly down the highway and have a conversation now. Amazing how much the "little" things do to ride quality and pleasure of driving it.

Still plan on making door panels with closed cell foam layering, kilmatting the trans tunnel and entire rear section/wall of the cab. Every little thing really makes the truck that much more pleasurable to drive and makes it not just a "bush buggy".

We have switched over to using the products offered by Second Skin Audio......really some interesting stuff. Their Spectrum spray in deadener/insulator is some really impressive stuff. Anyone going down the road of sound deadening should have a look at their offerings...

They have fantastic technical support too. Really a cool company.

Wow @toyotaboy80 - that is some coverage. Way more than I did on the doors. I covered probably 60% of the inside of the outer skin. I think the biggest improvement was going from nothing but the vinyl flooring to the full-floor coverage. Like yours, the truck is almost silent on the highway now.

Bumper and lights yesterday. Really down to the bed now.

I miss my 1985 xcab. Wish I didn't sell it.

Well @pappy you'll just have to suffer along with a beautiful example of the single best year in the life of the 4Runner. ;)

I still have my 85 4R. I ain't stupid enough to sell that.

Actually... I don't think so. Just did though. Thanks!

Got a "no" on my inquiry - clean(ish) bed, interior panels...

Driving to Austin is looking better and better.

Looking great!

Plenty of good food and bars in Austin. Plus you can get an electric scooter gang together for about 30¢ per minute.

I asked the seller if he had a "clean(ish) bed". He replied "no". That's it... no.

I guess the red one is worse than it looks in the pic.

There's another for sale three hours from me - a 2wd off an '87. Other than the smaller "flares", they're same, right?

I’ve always liked the lipped bed over the fleet side. Depends on if you want correct, though. The knock on the lipped beds is that they are single wall where the fleet beds are double wall.

The old stamped tailgate is also cooler than the smooth one with decals. IMHO

@G-Cat I agree - I do like the lipped bed and that tailgate more. I want to keep the truck sorta stock - like all Toyota and from the same era. So, that bed/gate would be cool with me.

Now, I have to decide if I’m up for a 6-hr drive to inspect and maybe buy a bed.
