The best thread ever for sure.

Here is mine, I have it torn down to replace the floors but it seems much harder to pull the trigger on a paint job than I thought.

Even though I am sure its not all original Toyota red, when I took the diamond plate off it still had the Milton Martin dealer sticker in perfect condition underneath how can you paint over that.

BTW I have the best pit crew there is.

I’ve been reading about using boiled linseed oil to coat Patina and protect.

Anyone use?

I've used it to coat and protect old vises when restoring them. It works great but does slightly change the color / look of the raw steel. Kind of a yellowish tint. I'd definitley try on a small spot to see its affect on the actual paint.

Also - don't wad up any rags with BLO unless you want to start a fire.
 
Before and after shots of my in-progress barn find patina rescue. Really more of "dirty before" and "clean before" pics. First one was Day One post-barn. Shiny pic is the best corner all cleaned up and after a moderately vigorous rub-down with cheap Turtle Wax rubbing compound. Still lots of character in the paint, but a damn nice start. The hard top paint is rattle can dark red over white that doesn't match at all, but the main body paint is all in pretty damn good condition, save for a few spots where the farm life took its toll.

For the guys asking about preserving the patina.....Ankor Wax is an interesting product. The VW patina community has used it quite a while. I have some, have never tried it. Ordered it from the UK. Used for preserving farm equipment when shipping as I recall. The biggest issue with it is that if you go to repaint, it is very difficult to fully remove. Something like that. Maybe I'll put some on one of the patina trucks tomorrow to check it out.

Anybody ever tried Boeshield T-9? It goes on oily, then dries to a very thin waxy finish. Developed by Boeing for keeping parts from rusting before install. Awesome stuff for tools and fishing gear. Not sure if the waxy finish would attract too much dirt. Spendy, but I might try some on some of my exterior exposed metal. I've used Barricade gun rust protector on small parts as I wire wheel them to keep them from getting rusty again before I put the truck back together. Pretty similar, but I like the Boeshield better. Just need to order some more.

I used CLR with a Scotchbrite pad. Then I washed and waxed. Then I rubbed a small amount of bar and chain oil on the bare metal parts. Looks great and leaves a very thin waxy finish (rub the excess bar and chain oil off). Haven’t touched it in months and it still looks the same after sitting in the elements.

I jumped in and did the boiled linseed oil treatment today after watching 20 YouTube videos and reading all about it.

No real downside except repainting would require a strip to get the oil off. Not planning on repainting ever so that took that off the table.

Laid it on thick on the bare metal and thin on the paint. Wiped off excess with dry microfiber

Extremely pleased. I’ll watch it and if I see any other negatives I promise to report in.

Took about 1/4 can to do truck exterior and in cab and about another 1/4 to do the heavily pitted bed area.

That turned out very nice!!! You have one of the best examples of patina. Not too rusted, not too new. Perfect balance.
 
Same with my 40. If you don’t have exterior holes it makes it so much nicer in the end.

I’m about to tackle the 40 now. Looking forward to seeing if it pops the spring green
 
Yeah. It popped the Spring Green nicely.

I wish I had never sprayed the rust external bare metal with the Rust Inhibitor. I like the way the CLR and boiled linseed looks better than the way I did Patina. On it I did Rust Inhibitor then CLR then B Linseed.

No harm just like the way the pure rust spots look on the 45 better than the black color that the Rust Inhibitor metal has

Original paint 9/71 build. I’m the second owner. Purchased new in 1972 in San Angelo, TX...dry west Texas it’s entire life. Preservation!

Cleaning my folks shed out pay no attention to the mess Think I'm gonna head out there this week and roll it out so I can start checking out the suspension and fire it up. Been awhile. Wish I could move it to Reno but my garage is full right now Money is the main thing stopping me from pulling it apart, though

Wow! I thought I was feeling old...

I’m 7-yrs younger than the original truck mine started as.

I call mine a 69, but it has a 70 frame and tub. Only the front tin is still 69.
