I'm giving some thought to upgrading my Ute dash to the newer style. What are the thoughts of 'MUDville when it comes to old vs new?

Sounds like a lot of trouble. Old looks fine to me.
I was a little surprised when I bought my 70 that people actually go to the trouble and expense to “upgrade” their 70’s to wide nose. Another example where I like the original.

I wouldn't think that would be necessary with a 1HZ but then again I'm not exactly a mechanical genius.
Easy solution....have two trucks one with the old and one with the new! So depending on your mood you can pick the dash of your choice for the drive.
^^^ Experience and option. 
Old, the hard edges follow the body of the vehicle better. The rounded dash around the vents on the new one looks like something out of a corolla

Whatever the top picture is. Has a flat top dash area that is easier to mount stuff to and has the passenger 'assist' bar.
The roundy/ugly thing in the 2nd picture belongs in a car or an FJ

The path I chose. Expensive.
Lot of work to retrofit the new dash into the cab that came with the metal dash....some pretty big differences....even the windshield is different.

It looks like it belongs in a Corolla! The only advantage here is it can be had with a Dual Cab, which may be sufficient reason to overlook how it looks.The "new dash" ain't getting no love.
