Yea I hear you @Felde , I'm trying to find a good balance of coverage vs. future rust problem creation. I may have overdone it in a few spots... :dead:

Just have to keep an eye on it and do some preventative maintenance once in a while.

I'm using 3 different products:
-3mm butyl mat for some additional sound deadening on the big panels and to build up the sections of corrugation
-1/4" foam with a reflective face inside the wall panels and doors over-top of the butyl for insulation.
-3in1 - 1mm butyl, 2mm foam and 2mm of mass loaded membrane (the black shiny faced product throughout the cabin floor)

I had to install a layer of the 3mm butyl in spots where there was a lot of corrugation because the 3in1 was not nearly as pliable as the butyl.

On another note, picked up this beauty the other day. Going to have to adjust my plans…

Twins!

Convinced the wife to drive 7 hrs each way in a snowstorm and overnight in Calgary to make it happen. She’s convinced it’s going to cost me a warm sunny vacation somewhere, whether I’m going or not 😂

It was worth it,
1988 BJ74
109,000km
Factory cable lockers
Factory PTO winch
Immaculate interior.
Excellent maintenance history.
Even found the famous flare and some treasure in the glovebox.

Truck was used by a hunting guide for 20 years and then the next owner did 10k km gave up on it and parked it in a farmers field for 2 winters. So the body’s not great..

Love it!

This is a great find. Thank you for buying it, I don't need another Toyota project and I would have tried to justify the purchase somehow !

They're always easy to justify, and you're metal work on that 73 is looking awesome. Something I need to learn or pay someone to do.

Ya thanks @Rigster , feeling pretty lucky! It basically jumped into my lap, I was looking for a parts truck for a bunch of interior and an extra set to make half doors... Got a bit more than that 😁

Pulled the batteries and started to chase all the extra wiring. Bit tedious but looks much cleaner now. PO "customized" the battery trays..More parts to track down. Made a few phone calls, front is available from Japan for $$$ shipping, rear is NLA. Anyone?

Well that's disappointing. I bought one off partsouq a couple years back but it looks like the tray is NLA. You can still order the arms though.

And I see a chinese tray on ebay. It looks like the right shape to hug the inner fender / wheel well.

These are the parts I used. Although I remember the clamp I received was actually a match for the front not the rear, so I had to cut/bend it a bit to fit.
  • 74403-60140 - tray
  • 74404-60090 - clamp
  • 74434-90K03 - support arm
  • 74435-90K02 - support arm

Hello,

You can try a later model (2007 on) tray.

This tray may need a bushing or two to fit the fender.

Thanks @JuanJ and @TreadingLight

I ended up ordering the tray and one battery hold down from Cruiserparts.net, I was a bit skeptical after reading some poor reviews of the website but they showed up without hassle. The tray is off of a 2000+ 70 series P/N 74403-60230 the only problem is that they mount on the right side of the engine bay not the left like the BJ74, I will have to relocate the studs to mount the support arms and the hold down, but for $25 I cannot complain! I'll get some pics once its complete in case anyone else runs into this in the future.

Careful with them

Bad things come in 3's as my grama always said, first I was sick for a month with a really bad chest infection, then after being cooped up I fractured a bone in my leg skiing. Last but not least we had to put our dog down after finding out he had a tumor on his spleen, got a few good cruises in with him before he was gone, but damn the trucks just not the same without him, I got very used to seeing his perked ears in the rearview.

Been staying busy getting this beast ready for paint, really want to keep it Toyota/OEM looking. But damn I do love the factory silver instead of the gray

So sorry for your loss. Had to unexpectedly put my best friend to rest almost exactly a year ago due to bone cancer a few days before his 5th birthday.
Devastated and still have a hard time even thinking or talking about it now. He’s greatly missed so I wish you good vibes.
