I'd like to see what you guys have done for alternative non-oem steering wheels...

Anyone tried airbags? (didn't search :flipoff2:)

Grant. see pics in sig line.

The 79 FJ40 has a 70s celica steering wheel, looks something like this-

power steering

all those after-market steering wheel rigs have power steering right?

seems they might be hard to steer on a manual rig or am I wrong on that?

i used this one

My original had a borked spoke. 2 were still attached the third was floppy.
I band sawed off the outer portion including the plastic.
Chucked the hub up in the lathe and made it round.
Drilled and tapped holes in the old hub to match the 37.00 replacement wheel.
turned a piece of aluminium to take up the space on the back side.
bolted em together and painted em flat black. Looks nice enough
still 3 spoke nice padded wheel. only an inch shorter in dia than the original. (no noticable increase in steering effort) I have no
powersteering.
I will post pics this weekend.Grant 677 - Grant Performance Steel Steering Wheels - JEGS

also run a grant wheel, must have power steering if your going to go to a small wheel, unless you enjoy the super forearm workout

horn works

the horn works I used the Factory button.
If you didnt know the wheel wasnt stock you probably wouldn't notice is wasnt original.
as for the cancelation, that didnt work when i got the rig and havent bothered yet to find out what I need to make it work.
Will post pics on Saturday.
Most likely the cheapest best mod I have done so far.

I've got a Grant too. I've painted it black since the photo was taken, but it's way too flexy. I think i'll eventually get another one like the one in my Mustang.

I want to see someone take an OEM steering wheel and cut it down to a smaller size for power steering rigs. That would be the Bees knees...

Anyone done that before?

As long as we're being silly, here't the one I REALY want, Holmes.

I think that's the same one I have - I just ordered it through my local Schucks store and picked up the adapter kit off the shelf. The adapter isn't especially good looking from the side due to the gap behind the wheel, but it works. No signal cancelling on the 64, so I don't know about that, but the Grant horn button works just fine despite its poor design.

I don't recall which adapter kit I used, but it's listed for early 70s Chevy trucks and has the correct spline count & size for early cruisers.
