New to the 40 section. Need Help with seal size/part number (1 Viewer)

I have always been a 100 guy but recently I sold one of my 100's and got sucked into a 40 project. I'm in the process of the power steering conversion. found a used box (1985 4wd pickup w/ power steering) off a local guy that I have used for parts before and he said it didn't leak. I got it all put together and fluid in it and I had a leak. It could have also been caused by me having to heat the old pitman arm til it was red as a cherry to make it pop off but I have a feeling the guy parting out the truck knew. But whatever things like this arent supposed to go smooth.

Anyways, I need the seal that goes on the pitman arm shaft out of the steering box. I feel like I have searched the interweb pretty hard and have come up with things that are close but not quite. I thought I found it so I went and bought it at oreilly and it was off by 2mm on OD.

My measurements are 41.55mm on the housing and 31.75mm on the shaft. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

nothings major/mechanical wrong its front trim/grill piece that is upside down on most cruisers at some point or another

Ahhh.
I got it now. Never noticed that. Haha. Thanks for the replies on part numbers. Local Toyota dealership was insistent on having a VIN number to order the part and he didn't understand why I didn't have it.
 
I looked at the SKF size specs. the shaft size is perfect, but my bore is 1.64 and they list it at 1.732. thats almost exactly what i got from Oreilly. I have one ordered from toyota finally and it is supposed to be here this morning. hopefully it is the right bore size.
 
well the toyota seal was a bust. showed it for an 84-85 4runner and 84-85 pickup part number 90311-32014.

Beno do you have any exact spes on that seal you gave the part number for?

starting to get very irritated after three different tries. the guy at the toyota dealership was worthless as tits on a nun.
 
The old seal come off the outside and then revealed the snap ring that i assume holds the bushing/bearing in. please correct me if I am going at this in the wrong way. It will save me a lot of frustration. the part number on the original NOK seal was AG1862E. as far as i can tell

Sounds like somebody in the past tried to seal up a leaking steering box the quick way instead of tearing the box down. The box definitely needs to come apart to replace the seal. It's pretty easy to screw up one of these boxes and find yourself with 44 ball bearings all over your floor if you're not careful.

X2 been there done that, it sucks. But if you go slow and be patient they are fairly easy to take apart. i just rebuilt a 83 box for my 40 I was able to find all the parts from Toyota.
 
i appreciate all the help. It looks like yall are right after lookin at pictures of complete steering boxes on the computer. someone has jammed a seal in at some point to prevent it from leaking. So after all my time wasted I had the correct seal and was just gettin screwed by someone half assing it before me. :doh:

I am going to get one more seal and disassemble the box and replace it properly. (good excuse to drink some beers) if that fails i suppose ill buy a refurb box from somewhere and turn this one in as a core. my time is worth something at this point.

The dust seal would be in direct contact with the cross shaft and within close proximity to the area you heated to remove the pitman arm. You might have cooked the dust seal if you heated the cross shaft threads "red hot" as you described. I'm in the middle of a rebuild and purchased the gasket kit for the job. The dust seal has the markings NOK AG1862E

Internally, behind the snap ring, there's a steel washer then an O ring with a teflon ring sitting inside of it. The O ring doesn't make direct contact with the cross shaft. So, the O ring may be okay; however, the teflon ring is in direct contact with the cross shaft. So, I have questions about the impact of high heat on the teflon ring.
