Well @FloridaLife: it gets plenty hot here in the northeast 🄵. we have had 101 to 106 this summer and those crazy lithium ion e-bikes have been involved in more than 1/2 dozen massive fires just in a few borough's of NY in the last 6 months. I would hope the tech on these things has been updated to eliminate that hot cell issue

I’d stick to a nice Optima battery. Not that cheap though ..They have a really good reputation…plus you can get a Red Top and match your FJ40 šŸ˜‚

You've got that right!

Ain't no way i would want a lithium whatever battery in a classic vehicle....never had any complaints about the ol lead acid batteries.

Yep, as soon as Tim told me it was a Lithium-ion battery that was responsible for burning up that storage unit with over $30,000 in parts for that old Bronco restoration I punted on that possibility!

Gut Punched New
Got a gut punch from the man working on my FJ40.

EVERYTHING was on the 40 when it left my house in less than 24 hours after it arrived, off to the local JACKA-S IDIOTS that TOTALLY ripped me off. They money I made from selling my motorcycle and my 4Runner to put towards this project went straight down the toilet!!! 🤬🤬🤬

Now I'm informed that that half the things they took off of it (turn signals, front side markers, rear side markers, 1 headlight trim ring (how the f-ck do you have 1 and not the other) license plate light, and reverse light are either broken, or missing. And, joy joy, the hood spear has rust, the door handles are crap, and the inner door handles are crap. So, as my grandfather would say.... "If it was raining soup... All you'd be able to find is a fork."

Can't win for losing. And to top it off, my wife logged into the online banking, totalled up what I've spent on this project, and was NOT a happy camper. So I may very well end up when it is finished (I've come too far not to finish it now) listing it and setting the reserve price at the break even point, and never even sitting in it or driving it.

That brings up a question for all of you...

I've been reading @Chamba 's thread has shared and the BaT disaster. Would you guys recommend I lest it on BaT or on Doug's site "Cars & Bids" or something else?

Thanks

If you're going to sell it and it isn't too late, I would install a 4 or 5 speed rather than an automatic. Manuals on average sell for more, and it seems to me that the 40s with automatics sell for less, given they are all modified to be that way. I understand why you chose the slush box.

As for BaT, I think it's definitely a seller's website. So long as you can get the reserve you want set, think you'll do better there than Cars and Bids.

Definitely too late to change the transmission. Not only due to buying the automatic with overdrive tranny PLUS the outrageously expensive Advanced Adapter Kit, and it's all installed. I can't afford to buy another transmission and/or the labor to swap them out. At this point it is what it is.

Take a deep breath- that stuff can be added later- get her fired up and moving/stopping and celebrate.

Anyone have.... New
Reminder, my FJ40 is a 1971 with a build date of December 1970.

Anyone have a hood spear in good condition, no rust, that would polish up nice?

Also exterior door handles that the chrome is still good on? Mine the chrome is long gone and they are gray.

And tail lights with mounting brackets? Mine appear to be boat trailer lights & brackets.

If you have any of these and you are willing to part with them, please send me a PM.

Thank you.

It’s always darkest just before dawn. Chin up, old sport. You’ve already overcome much larger hurdles in this build…and in life. Onward!

Exhaust is done. šŸ‘šŸ˜ƒ

I can't wait to hear it!
If you plan to sell it you might want to skip that. That ā€˜parental bonding’ reflex kicks in pretty hard at the first wail of a 5.3.

LOL! Yep, I've never had an LS. I see & hear them on the TV in shows like Iron Resurrection at Joe Martin's shop, or Texas Metal at Bill's shop, but I'm sure this cheap TV doesn't do it justice. I got a video of it running for about 3 seconds straight off the headers and it was loud. I had planned on running dual exhaust, but I was surprised to learn that a stock 5.3 will lose some of the snappy throttle and low end torque with dual exhaust. For the best performance, snappy throttle response, and low end torque we ran the down pipes to a Y pipe that converted it to 3" pipe, then into a Borla muffler with their patented "No Drone" technology and 3" all the way out.

I went with 2 1/2 off the manifolds to a Y pipe and 3ā€ back to a Magniflow muffler. Two into one. I wasn’t so much worried about performance as just fitting it all in. Real estate becomes an issue more than anything. 3ā€ pipe is even overkill in my opinion.
My exhaust guy wasn’t too thrilled about not having the tub on there. I thought it would make it easier but he needs to see the clearances. My Y pipe wrapped around the front of the oil pan and I figured out a couple months later that the stock pan doesn’t allow enough clearance for the front driveshaft. I ended up with a Hummer oil pan, a smaller flange/yoke from AA on the Tcase and a narrow front driveshaft from Tom Woods.
You will run into the same issues. Better to plan for it now.

Here’s a picture of the oil pans and the flange/yoke on the Tcase. I can get a picture of the front driveshaft if you want it.
You’ll also want to slide the engine to the driver’s side about an inch. The oil pan on the 4L60e is pretty wide.

Looking back at the transfer case. Advance Adapters sells the narrow flange which I think comes with the yoke. I have a hard time navigating Advanced Adapters website but I think I saved all of the paperwork.
As you can see the transmission pan is very close.

You mount the flange and send the yoke to Tom Woods.
