I’ve got a cityracer booster and aisin or advics on my ‘78. If I were to do it again, only thing I’d change is to use an 80 series master.

I’m a fan of buying rolls of 3/16 nickel copper and bending / flaring myself. I’ve done prevent before (on things other than Land Cruisers) and they’re fine, but much prefer just bending my own.

Thank you @nabbasi

Someone in another thread said that Toyota used the same bolt pattern for power brake boosters for 25 years, FJ40 - 4Runner, and just find one I like and it will work. However, "IF" the images are accurate (and they may not be) if you click the links below and look on the images for the FJ80 booster I'm only seeing 3 studs through the firewall. Again, "IF" the image is accurate, and it may not be. But the image for the '76 booster shows 4 studs for both the front and back. Thoughts? See below:

For a 1976 FJ40 (first year of disc fronts & drum rears):

For a 1992 FJ80 with front discs & rear drums:

There is another image showing all 4 studs... (I'm also considering altrnate MC)

Brake Parts New
That's the front / master cylinder side. That back / firewall side only showed 3. Probably a bad pic, but I decided to play it safe and get the '76 that comes with the spacer. Less than $10 more

I got the booster ordered.

If I were working on it myself I would bend my own brake hard lines, but since I am paying someone else it may be more cost effective to order a pre bent set. I'm thinking that even though it is a 1971 (build date December 1970), since it has the 1976 FJ40 front disc brakes I need to order the 1975 - 1980 brake line kit.

I might as well replace the T's too. A local parts store said they are generic, and just bring one down and match it up. I know it needs to be a 10mm x 1.0 metric. Maybe cut off the end of an old hard line to use to make sure the threads match up. Beyond that, anyone know a good source for them? I called Sonny at FJ Parts, checked Cruiser Corps, SOR, Toyota Parts Deal, CCOT, RockAuto, and a couple of others. The only one I found was at JP Outfitters for $19 and round. I've never seen a round brake line T before.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

And Happy Labor Day!

If your running the brake lines like they were run for a disc brake front end, you'll need the junction block that mounts on the passenger side frame rail. It's a little hard to see in the 1st pic. Years ago I found one, so I could run the lines in a stock fashion. stock. I think @cruisermatt makes one.
There's also a junction block that mounts to the front axle.

Oh yeah. Zooming in I can see the one you are talking about on the front passenger's side frame. So I need 3 T-blocks, not just 2. Ok. Thank you so much for the heads up! That's helps a lot!

The one on the frame is 2 separate elbows mounted to a piece of angle iron. The one on the axle is a unique T fitting.

For My Sons New
For those following this thread you know I've talked about possibly giving the FJ40 to my oldest son someday as a wedding gift, to keep & enjoy driving or to sell to have the down payment for he & his wife's first home someday. That would mean I'd have to get a 2nd one for our 2nd son. But this has become so expensive that I can't see doing a 2nd one, unless I win the lottery or something.

With that said, after all this expense, I may have my family bury me in it when I die. On the bright side, it will be built & sealed so well that if one of my sons decides to dig it back up and drive it, it should still be in great shape and ready to go! LOL!

I put an FJ62 booster on my ‘72 FJ40. The bolt holes lined up, yes, but I had to add a 1/2” spacer between the booster and the firewall, otherwise there was some interference and it wouldn’t mount flush. I think City Racer sells a spacer, if I’m not mistaken. I also had to modify the push rod assembly and pedal yoke a little to get old and less old parts to play nicely together.

That's good to know, because I ordered the one for the 1976 FJ40 with front disc brakes from Rock Auto and it comes with the spacer you mentioned. Cost about $11 more, but still for $88 I felt like that wasn't too bad. For anyone else that might need one, here's the link:

Anyone Have One of These??? New
I posted this in the Want ads in the Classifieds too, but I thought I would post it here as well:

I need an early, 1974 or older, cross piece that goes from left to right above the rear lift gate that the lift gate attaches to. Hatch Header. Mine has enough rust damage on it that with the rate per hour of the guy that is working on it, by the time he could repair it I may have been able to save money by finding a replacement. So if you have one, please let me know.

Thank you!

Is that a dual-diaphragm brake booster? The ad does not mention it.
I went with the CityRacer booster and 80 series brake master...

That looks great! I wish I had not already bought a dual reservoir master cylinder a long time ago when I was expecting to be running the 2f engine setup. I would much rather have that single reservoir that you have just for a cleaner look. I don't know if the one that I got is a dual diaphragm or not. Hopefully it works.

According to this, that one I ordered is in fact a dual diaphragm brake booster. But I wish I had not already had that dual reservoir Master because I like the look of yours better. Anyway, here's the info on the booster that I bought:

Gemini Search Results:

Yes, the SKP SKBB058 brake booster is a dual-diaphragm booster. [1] (https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/replacing-1974-booster.1287689/)This vacuum power brake booster is designed as an OE-style replacement for 1976–1987 Toyota Land Cruisers (such as later FJ40, FJ60, and BJ series models). In these setups, the dual-diaphragm configuration is utilized to deliver higher brake-assist line pressure and a more responsive pedal feel compared to the older, single-diaphragm boosters found on early-1970s Land Cruisers. I wish I had not already bought my master cylinder over a year ago. I could have bought that same one from RockAuto for $60 and the Dual Diaphram Booster for $88 for a total of $148 and saved myself some money, plus have a little more room under the hood. I like your setup. Here's that same brand 80 series master:

And if anyone else is looking for an 80 series master, here is a link with some all the way down to about $35:

The gentleman working on my 40 found one locally in great shape. Problem solved. 👍

Will the "GENUINE TOYOTA 69-87 LAND CRUISER BJ60 FJ40 INSPECTION LAMP SOCKET" work for plugging in a household item, or is it only suitable for something like the tiny inspection light?
You're talking about the plug in the glove box? It will with the 2 prong plug, but you'll have to file the thicker plug down to the same width as the thinner plug. But bear in mind it's 12 volt, not 110.

Good point.

I'm also starting to think about what battery to get.

Is anyone out there running a Lithium-ion battery? If so, did you get a group size 24 or 27, and where did you source it from? I've been doing some searching. I hear they are a fraction of their weight, only 10 to 12 lbs, some have a remote jump start capability built in (controlled with a key fob), more powerful, guaranteed to last longer, and if space was an issue and/or you were trying to clean up your engine compartment they can be mounted somewhere on their side or upside down without a problem. I'm very curiously interested.

Thanks for any helpful info.
