This is exactly how I've bought every Land Cruiser I've ever owned, except one. Ironically enough, the one I looked at before buying is the only one I had to scrap due to frame rot. The mind sees what it wants to see. :hillbilly:

Anyway, the repairs look great!

Yeah, for some reason, my wife (who used to be a Forensic Investigator for the GBI) feels like being able to stop is important. Especially when you have a V8. So I guess to keep her happy it might as well have good brakes. 🤪
101% right…. Prior to the disk brake conversion my brakes were squirrelly and a quick stop would make the truck a bit unstable like it was top heavy .
@Jdc1 sent me a video test of him driving the 40 late at night and a panic stop from 60mph. PERFECT STOP!

I have tested the same panic stop here at my location several times to become aware of any peculiarities I may need to know when out on the NJ main roads as the following distance here seems to be about 20 feet. PERFECT STOP!

it is a very comforting feeling knowing the modernization of that system has proven to be so significant…you’ll love it

Bringing the 70s into the 80s? Al, remind me what master we went with?

I haven’t had much to share because I’ve spent the past few months doing a bunch of rust and dent repair on my brother’s VW bus. Also I’m halfway through another house flip. Also, I have a full-time job! lol Really missing my Cruisers though, so hoping to be back on another LC project very soon!

Hey Jesse, since you've used both, which master cylinder do you prefer? And why? Thanks!
The 80 series has a firmer feel because of the larger 1” bore. Sometimes I have to adjust the rears a little farther out than before because it’s moving more fluid.

On the last conversion(1972) it had a nearly new year appropriate Aisin. I had success at removing the front residual valve and ran it that way.

From what I recall, the stk 72 version master had a 1" bore too. My 40 was a Oct 71 build date(72 model).

My grandfather had a VW bus with the pop up top, wooden cabinets, dining table, and a pullout radio with AM, FM SW1, and SW2. And if I remember correctly the 2 front windshields would swivel out to let more air in when it was hot. Lots of memories of going fishing in it with him. He also drove it all over Europe when he was still active duty military. I wish I had that old VW now!

Our green ‘72 was a 12/71. Had a 10/72 that had buckets and 2 piece steering column.

I, too, have a 12/71 '72 in green!

I did a disc brake swap on the '72. I ended up using an FJ62 master and booster, which seems to be working well. I had to put a little spacer behind the booster, and even so it interfered slightly with the installation of my new clutch master. But with everything bolted in place it works fine. Just putting another MC option on the table for ya, @FloridaLife.

I remember @knuckle47 telling me you had a green 40 that was as close to perfect that it gets! He said you were thinking of selling it. Did you?

Before deciding to switch the game plan and do the LS swap I had bought a new master cylinder with 2 reservoirs like my original ('71 built 12/70), and like you mentioned, cruisermatt told me if I pulled that plastic piece out of the front one it would work fine without a portioning valve. "Hopefully" it does not get in the way of the LS. That's the only reason I was thinking of going to the smaller single reservoir, was to be less in the way.

Remember the LS is a little different if a shape and you won’t have to worry about that chunk of intake/exhaust and carb taking up space near the master.

Here’s the BaT listing from last fall:

We did sell it privately to a Gentleman from Charleston SC.

Front Disc Brakes Conversion New
Ran into something you don't see every day. In fact, I don't remember ever seeing it before. The calipers were badly rusted and locked up, so I ordered a pair of remans. The passenger side disc brakes went on just like they should, no problem. But on the driver's side, the caliper would not fit over the rotor (see pics below). My first thought was that they sent the wrong one. But, the part number on the box, and the casting numbers on the caliper itself were correct. Ordered another one, and it was an exact match to the one that wouldn't fit, but the new one fit. So, our theory is that with the first one, during the remanufacturing process they must have had to mill the 2 surfaces to get them smooth and flat, and I'm doing so took off just enough that it would no longer fit over the new rotors.

See pics (well, I guess pic, the other 2 won't upload):

Unusual, maybe not as much as you;d think. I know I had been thru a few mismatches on parts that were supposed to fit the vehicle I was doing work on. Especially stuff that has been cross-referenced 3 or more times. Like language translations….something just isn’t right.

Hopefully these are few and far between…. Gonna be a fun ride when your getting close to wrapping up

Guessing Game Friday! New
TGIF !!!

knuckle47 you are not allowed to play, because you already know the answer.

Let's have some fun. When the front disc brake conversion was being done and the knuckles and birfs and everything were getting cleaned up and prepped, the guy that was doing it sent me this photos because he has personally owned probably a dozen FJ40's of his own, and has redone many for other people, but this was a first for him, so he sent me a pic. It probably looked even more wild / crazy but he had already removed some with the pick you can see in the photo.

Name what doesn't belong. For every wrong answer, take a shot or a chug of your favorite Friday night liquid of choice:

That's just bat**** crazy!

It is NOT bat****, LOL, so everyone take a drink! Woohoo! Let's get this Friday night started with a bang! I will also say that over my life, depending on where I was living at the time, I've seen spider egg sacks, snake eggs, lizard eggs and gecko eggs in some unusual places. Game on.....
