These seats are really something special. Completely transforms the truck and its driving experience.

For the driver.

I bet you get a whine from the passenger seat.

Did you say you needed a toyota spare rim. Pretty sure I have one from a new 4runner in the barn.

I'm using FJ Cruiser wheels on this one...7.5" wide. That 4Runner spare is 7" wide.

This look pretty much sums up the passenger's feeling about the seat.

Got the seat in....learned something interesting today. On #2, I ordered a LEFT side Planted seat bracket. The Scheelmann supplied seat tracks fit right on. Ordered the same one for this truck, the Scheelmann supplied seat tracks did not fit right on. I was discussing with my tech who has Scheelmanns in his F250.....when he bought his planted brackets, they came 2 different ways...for Recaro....or for everything else. So I'm guessing that Planted has 2 tops for their brackets...one for the Recaro(I want to say they were about 1/4" off) and one for other seats tracks. I must have got the Recaro one. We popped a couple of new holes in it and all was good. Kind of a head scratcher though.

Number 1's bracket....seat fit right in.

Not off by much but just enough to be a real pain. Way easier when they drop in.

The Planted folks are very good at what they do but you need to specify that the brackets are for Scheel Mann - every time you order. :)

Guess I got lucky the first time I ordered and got the right one

They have no ability to select for the 70 series brackets when you order what you want.

Yes, requires note in order or a phone call.

Got all 4 of the 285s on today.....nice setup. Next week we will get the alignment done and then it's time to start stretching it's new legs a bit I think 😀

This is where the new booster went. Swapped out the original unit from the donor truck to this one.....pedal feels much nicer. Firmer. Brakes always felt soft but not soft from air in them on the truck. Nice consistent feel now.

I had forgotten how much we modified the firewall to fit the 80s booster. Really boneheaded way to do it. Could have used a spacer block which would have pushed it out enough to clear the rib. Could have probably just sourced a 70 series booster/master as well but when I was building this truck way back when, it wasn't as easy to get parts. I had never heard about Partsouq or Megazip. Really challenging to find stuff. Plus I was stubbornly deadset on keeping things all 80 series where I could.

Still fussing around with this truck. We ran out of room in the shop for trucks last week....found a gap today and got it in.

Added a hand throttle. Pretty easy and pretty cool that the trucks are ready for them. Had the steering column out so it was easy to add this.

The column was out as on the last trip I had it out on, the column started groaning. The upper bearing/ignition tumbler was new when I built the truck....so I was pretty sure it wasn't going to be that one but I couldn't remember if we had replaced the lower one.

Once we got it all apart, the bearing right above the first u-joint was toast. Replaced it, the spring that's in there and the plastic collar. Also replaced the bearing in the base of the column....pretty sure I replaced that when we put this column in a long time ago but I had one and it was out so it was getting replaced. I seem to recall this column being an RHD one that we converted to LHD.

Simple job to replace this stuff and it makes a big difference.....really tightens things up. Troopy is on the to-do list next...but I think it needs u-joints.

Still messing around with springs on the rear of the truck.....we installed the springs on the right. These are 4" lift springs for an 80.....they handle 400-800 lbs of constant weight. I think these are going to do the trick.

The truck went up about an inch with them in the rear which was perfect. The ones on the left were 3" lift springs with 220lbs of weight.

Rear springs worked perfectly. Truck feels really solid. Will have to readjust shock settings now....

Started in on the ARB bumper install.....seemed like a good week to pull the truck in the shop and get this done. It's a bit of an undertaking making the wider 70 series bar fit the narrower 80 series frame extensions. It's the same as the #2 truck....commercial bar for a flared wide nose truck. Didn't want to change it up too much as I like the look and fit.

80 series frame.....about 2.5" narrower than the 70 series frame.

Stock 70 ARB bumper configuration.

We start by cutting the inner walls out of the bumper where it slides on the frame. We will re-use that cross bar.

Lots of pattern making on this project. We'll transfer this to the U channel we are having made along with the 3 other sides.

20201030_170204.jpeg

Lots and lots of placing the bumper on and off the truck. The hoist makes it really easy.
20201102_150504.jpeg

I'm not sure any of the mounting holes line up with anything on the 80....so we'll be doing a ton of drilling.

I wanted to start with the sides....once we carefully got the bumper level and centered side to side.....we made our marks and got to drilling. Behind these 3 holes will be 1 and 1/16" steel tube spacers to take up the gap of the wideness of the 70 vs the narrowness of the 80. I want to have the bumper located with these locates...then we'll build the inner plates. They're a little tricky to get just right.

More bumper work today.....got our spacers built for the outside of the frame
20201103_102958.jpeg

Mounted the bumper to the frame. We spent a long time measuring things and lining them up. I think one side was 1" spacers and one side came in at 1 1/16". Bar sits about 1/4" towards the right side of the truck. I measured all the other bulbar trucks and they're all off about the same which is interesting. Not visible on any of them.

No more engine hoist to hold it in place and we've got a neat tape scheme going on for some reason.

The sheetmetal shop bent this piece incorrectly. New one in the AM.

It will get cut up and put here

Which got prepped for it's big day of welding tomorrow.

OMG.

I want!!

Beautiful. Amazing. I would love nothing more that to take that rig for a spin.

Special truck!

If you're in Tampa, stop on in and we'll go for a ride :)

Another day, more bumper work.
Picked up our correct piece of metal....patterns made and transferred.
