A friend of mine asked if there were any propane powered generators on the market. I’m not sure and haven’t looked into it yet but thought it might be a good idea. Better/easier to store/hoard propane than gasoline and doesn’t go bad like gas does?

Guess that answers the first question…

Our house has a 50 kW propane generator. It is driven by a V6 engine. IIRC we have a 350 gal buried propane tank. We bought the house 3 1/2 years ago and haven't refilled the tank yet but we also haven't ran the generator. The only other appliances that use propane are the fireplaces' starters and the range in the kitchen.

Putting 24KW propane generator on the parents and our home. Our 1000 gallon tank runs for quite awhile between fills. Put 500 gallon for mom and dad. Both should last good while if needed.

Probably going with Generac but electrician buddy can by direct through Locke supply for discount.

Morning coffee waiting to take wife 5 mikes north to the Grand Canyon.

Cool thing about these trips are the beautiful things this great country has to offer.

Sunset at quick fuel stop last night in Seligman, Az had everyone taking pictures.

We installed a propane furnace when the house was built in '96, but never really used it, strictly wood heat. I bought a 500 gal. tank for it and it's still sitting there. My backup generator is a military surplus, 4 cylinder Onan diesel. with @ 725 gals. of diesel. It can power up the whole house at a cost of one gal. per hour, so I needed a backup to the backup, solar panels. 👍 The trailer came with two generators mounted on it, so you can switch back and forth for maintenance and keep running.

I removed the front one and put a 225 gal. fuel tank there.

The next step was to build a portable receptacle/circuit breaker station, so I can leave the generator away from where I need power (too noisy)

This is why I never get done with stuff, just should of went with the Generac system. :)

Ron, that is pretty impressive set up. You could probably power a small village with that!

Winslow pic on agenda today as I recreate your sig!

Before long that pic will be recreated more times than Marilyn over a grate only no skirts will be involved!!

Yeah, my old legs wouldn't look so good in a skirt, thank God!

One cool thing about that generator is it can run 3 phase power to the shop if needed. Some guys use them just for that instead of running 3 phase from the electric pole.

I don't want to tell you what to do, but test run that thing every month or so. You need to know it's problem free when it's go time.
Yes I know. Unfortunately it has a fault showing on the control panel and I haven't been able to get someone out to correct that issue (and to service the engine). I've made a few calls but I definitely need to get that corrected so I can routinely fire it up. I'll make another call or two.

Thanks for the nudge!

Edit: 1 gal/hr is pretty impressive fuel consumption for something that large.

Had a large propane generator for the off grid big cabin at my brothers ranch south of Gunnison. Backup for the solar. Switched on and off automatically when batteries for the solar were down. Don’t recall the brand…may have been Koehler, which also makes smaller propane units for RVs.

My wife decided we had to have a generator when we lived in Colorado. Bought this military surplus one. Never really used it though. Still sitting in my back yard in Missouri. Towed it back with my 4bt Dodge town wagon power wagon. Wish I still had the old wagon.

No plan except passing it on to next owner, like most of my stuff. Time to let go of things I once thought important enough to keep.
