Apologies if I missed it in prior posts, but I'm about to dive off into this project in the near future. When telling a friend my intentions, he suggested using his electric impact wrench to save time and labor on the removal of the bolts. I see no references to them here. Bad idea? Good idea?

On removal, sure.

On re-installation, no.

Thanks, beno! I'd be afraid of using it to do any re-installation, but was concerned about breakin' stuff even on removal.
 
I used a cordless impact gun to remove the larger bolts, no problems.
 
Quick question??? What part is needed to switch the birfs from side to side? As mentioned in post #14 it says if you got the kit from cdan it comes with part needed, what part is that??? Is it just the c clip?? I will be taking pics of everything i have tomorrow to make sure I have the correct stuff, I am doing this beginning of next week and don't want to be missing things!

The only extra parts you may need to swap sides are the C-clips if you separate your birfs from the axle shafts. IIRC the old ones shouldn't be reused but some people do, sometimes they break when removing the birfield joint from the axle shafts. The "kit" that CDan and Beno put together includes all the standard replaceable seals and gaskets, etc. Once you dig into everything you might possibly need other parts like wheel bearings, trunnion bearings or even spindles or spindle bushings. Depends on how it was serviced before, if it was neglected, abused, etc. How many miles on your rig?

225xxx miles, I got the kit from ACC Toyota and all the bearings, I figured I will switch birfs side to side while I am in there. I have everything I need I believe right now, just got to get the moly grease, stuffs hard to find. Heres some pics of what I have believe its everything I need. Ill get the c clips ordered and if theres anything else can some one point it out. The truck has been well maintained but I have no record of axle service for it so I have no idea whats in there. Thanks

I see no reason not to use an impact for removal. I would hand tighten everything though. That's just me.
 
julstirn: that knuckle looks sooo dry it would be interesting to see some photos of the inside of your knuckles and birfield joints and bearings before you clean them up ie: to see how much if any grease is still stuck to anything. Get some photos of the inside of the birfield cups also if you take them apart. Thanks

What Beno says. IMHO it's better to have the small parts on hand in case you need them and the FSM indicates that the inner and outer snap/c-rings and the lock washers are non-reusable parts. Here are a couple of photos showing the condition of some of the small parts from my rig's front axle when I dug into it for the first time. Top photo shows one of the shims that fit between the steering knuckle and the top trunnion cap, full of mini-dents. Bottom photo shows a lock washer that had been used many times, thrust washer with a wear groove that's not supposed to be there, dinged up spindle nut with damaged threads, the inner c-ring (thinner one) and the outer c-ring. From reading other posts, some Mudders have broken the inner c-clip when separating or reinstalling the birfields from/to the axle shafts. FWIW.

Moly grease is what I used; some of the grease in the knuckles gets pulled in the bushings normally so might as well use the same stuff. The FSM says to pack the knuckles about 2/3 full of Moly fortified grease before you put the spindle back on.
 
i was under the impression you used wheel bearing grease for wheel bearings and moly for inside birf area. Should I just use moly for it for all them?
 
I used the Redline CV Grease on bearings/spindles/knuckles and have not had a problem. It has moly in it
