This turd rolled in about a month ago. September 77….FJ40. Pretty original. Super duper rare Factory PTO.

Parts for this thing have been stacking up like cord wood since it arrived. I’d take a peek at it and order some s***. Peek again. Order more.

I’m finally finished with the FZJ75 I’ve been building Saudi 75 Too and it’s time to take thing thing from 💩 status

That’s a $15,000 pile

I decided I want to get all the engine stuff I need powder coating off first thing. My powder guy picked up a couple of huge commercial jobs so this stuff does not happen immediately like in days past.

I’m going out of town to deliver the 75 on Wednesday so I plan on getting a good start on this truck before I go

It’s a nice truck with a stack of paperwork on it’s history.

As always, I begin with removing everything the prior owners decided to put in the engine bay with extreme prejudice

I took a break after 3 hours of cutting and digging. It’s about to go up. In the air so I can get to more bolts.

Stay tuned

Wow! Can’t believe this plan is finally in motion. I can hardly wait to watch this turd transformation!

A little back story on this truck…. I believe somewhere in my stack of papers on this truck I saw the original title in MS.. then the truck made its way to the Atlanta area in the early 80’s where it was purchased by the 2nd owner off a dealership in the Marietta area. It was then transferred to the grandson who lived in Brookhaven GA (my hood) and sat for some time in an apartment garage till owner #3 got it in the 90’s. I found the truck on FB marketplace and it looked fairly unmolested/original from the other imported SA trucks that have flooded the market.

PO was a good steward of the vehicle and wanted to sell it to someone who would continue to care for it. I had been in touch with @wngrog when I had run across something I thought was worthy and passed on numerous trucks but this one spoke to me for some reason. After a few test drives and the approval from the sellers wife I took it off their hands so they could dive into the Van life.

@wngrog and I formulated a date to get the truck to him so we could get rolling.

In the meantime, I took the liberty of doing a few minor projects to move the ball forward. Seats were toast so I stripped them, and gave them a work over and recover to extend their life.

Also, swapped out a ton of crusty exterior hardware with Overland Metric bling to make me feel as if I had contributed to this project.

Truck runs and stops as it should but as Nolen stated to me “it’s just tired”…. To note the ugly.. has some cancer in a few spots that will be addressed down the road (rear seal is wrong and toasted, ambulance door has rot, rocker panel has rot, driver door has rust) and the paint is a close “match” to faded Dune Beige when it was repainted I believe in 2007ish. The R&I after paint wasn’t “great” but the PO wasn’t dealing with a cruiser shop in his defense.

Anywho.. imma pop some popcorn and let @wngrog do his thing in hopes he won’t crucify me for this project. Few pics attached of some of the early work. Please forgive as this is my first post in mud.

The truck cranked nicely and would run on choke. Someone did a desmog on it at some point that was mostly correct. Carb kits needed the JimC touch but it’s out. Sniper will go in.

The brakes were crazy. If you touched them the rears locked up. Thats all gonna go too.

I’m going to finish getting the stuff I need powder coated off tonight and tomorrow before I head north.

Full court press on this thing when I return. It’s got to be done and gone when and if the long awaited Troopy shows up in June.

Damn thing Gonna have to get the Wizard to weld this up.

As much as I hate it, I’m going to have to reuse this exhaust manifold because of the PTO shaft. Gross.

I’m going to try to do all this without removing be PTO. Those parts are like gold and if I don’t have to remove them I’ll be happy. That sector shaft has given me troubles on every one I’ve removed.

knew I had an exhaust leak somewhere.. maybe cerakote the manifold to hide the rust pox?😀

A 3FE manifold may be an option if you really wanted to get away from the 2F manifold. I run a 3FE manifold on a 74 1.5F and I think it would clear the PTO shaft unlike an aftermarket header and does not have the issue of frying the intake manifold.

Looking forward to the progress.

New 45 troopy?

Yea. Supposedly I’ll have a tracker on the ship this week. We keep getting caught in wars and the Red Sea
