Had a great test drive. 40 kilometers. No issues. All systems are go.

Ended up having to put the wipers on a toggle switch.
In that case, a clean solution could be one of those simple two wire 40 “fog light” switches with the knob swapped out.

I was not aware of FJ40's after 1974 with 4WD lights? I have a perfect OEM 1982 rear chassis harness and it does not have the 4WD light wires or reverse switch wires for that matter.
The trucks built 1980-84 have an under dash harness, the engine bay harness and the rear chassis harness.
The reverse switch connector is actually on the engine compartment harness in the same group of wires as the starter and oil pressure sending unit wires.
It is a round 2 pin sealed connector with Blue/Red and Red/Blue wires.

My 83 FJ45 Troopy has reverse switch wires and a 4WD indicator light on the dash. That connector that Nolen referenced is on my truck and 4 of the 6 wires go to those two switches: one on the transfer case and one on the transmission. I think the other two go to an unused connector but I can't be positive about that. As I said before, I didn't trace these down with my Fluke but I'm fairly certain what I have described is correct.

Guess I should have specified US based FJ40's?
So on my 1971 FJ40 the t-case has a switch on the vacuum shifter that turns on the 4WD light when engaged. Where is the switch on these 83-84 t-cases for that purpose? I need to expand my knowledge base on these later trucks...

It's a split case like a FJ60

Here are the part numbers and associated diagram for my Troopy. I assume they would be the same on this 40.

84210SWITCH ASSY, BACK-UP LAMP
84210-60021
84210TSENSOR ASSY, SHIFT POINT
Not applicable
84222SWITCH, TRANSFER INDICATOR, NO.1

I've been on a little vacation with Red to Switzerland. Man, it's been phenomenal.

The 84 was supposed to get picked up in my absence but when Tommy the brother in law grabbed it none of the gauges worked and he said a fuse was blown and when he put a new one in it popped that too.

So I start trying to figure out what the hell it is now and I think...this fuse box is shot

Gotta get a new one.

Search.

Nothing.

Message @ToyotaMatt to see what's what and boom. Look at this.

No one else has one. I'm stoked.

I say send that s***. I am stoked. This is what needs to happen.

Then I get this while I'm on the train

.....

It's nearing 9 pm and I do the unthinkable.

I return the call.

Turns out. The reason the 80+ fuse box is not available?

They are not a serviceable part like the earlier trucks. They are built into the wiring harness.

Holy s*** this thing.

So, after a 17 minute consult in the hotel room we've determined the best route is to use a 73-77 style terminal and just rewire each circuit into the older style fuse box.

The gift that keeps on giving giving.

Red says I was being rude to @ToyotaMatt so I want to say I was
He can handle it.

Btw. Switzerland is devoid of cruisers. I saw 5 in a week.
