The owner of this beauty tracked me down and asked me if I could help him get his 40 running.

His brother in law had a friend that was gong to "rebuild" it for him because the engine was smoking.

Fast forward 3-4 years and he got his motor back but that is where progress halted.

When I went to look at the job it was covered in chicken s*** and looked pretty sad and neglected.

I took the job and went and picked it and a nice pile of parts up back in December and shoved it in the shed while I took care of a couple I had in front of it.

11/83 build. H41 (granny low 1st) with 4.11s.

4 wheel drum with FF rear axle. AC. Power Steering.

Pretty pimp truck.

Today I drug it around to the shop and sorted out the parts in the back then started making a parts list.

The motor was just sitting in there because they had pulled the engine and left the transmission in place. That's super hard to stab like that so first order of business was to get that thing out so I can sort out and thoroughly clean the engine bay

Did you save the plumbers tape & wood block motor mounts ?
Curious, you said 4 wheel drum & I assume it is a splitcase, does it have the e-brake on the splitcase ?

This one has the ebrake in the rear drums. It's a split case yes.

The blocks were there to transport it to my house

Now's is the time for a H55F. With a H41 the only difference in driving is an OD.

Interesting I've never seen a Middle East 40 series or 43 series with a H55F. That includes LX models. Not sure I've seen one that has room light switches on the A pillars either. Only vantage of these late model four wheel drums is that they share the same brake components as the 60 and new 70 series of the 1980s. With a full floating rear axle it would have had the monster brake drums with cooling fins it was pre 8/80.

H55 is not on the list this time. I do have a trans cover for an H55 with a 40 top cover. The last H55 I put in a 40 series was a 45 Troopy.

Personally in a 40 series I prefer H42 with 3.70 gears.

Pulling out stuff to be powdercoated. Unwrapping wires. Lots of s*** wires that have been tapped into. Cut. Hacked.

Powder Pile 1

Getting there

Drug the Saudi 84 out and got the engine bay and axle grease free. Blasted out the frame too. It was pretty packed with poo

Came pretty clean

The heater valve was MIA and the core was hopelessly clogged but I finally got it clear with water and air.

Last shots of the day and I'm calling it.

I think the powder piles are complete.

Got the truck up in the air. The front drums are almost frozen so my normal method of just pushing won't work. I've been having to push it and pull it with the can am. Nice and clean like a desert truck should be

When I pulled the valve cover off I discovered the engine builder left all of the valve adjusters loose.

I've only been 1/2 ass working today. Couple hours this AM and took a long lunch with my buddy Greg Kemper. Back in the shop and I'm watching King of the Hammers and got this pulled out and pressure washed

It is quintessential. At least from the modern perspective. Let me explain, this was Toyota's final iteration of the FJ40. To imagine a machine that hadn't changed too much in twenty-four years... So, this stripped-down model is kinda the state-of-the-art for FJ40s. H41 seems exotic. Neat to see the wind-wing-ventilators. I dig it.

Ever looked into one of those dry ice blasters? They look like they would be phenomenal at de-schmooing things like that tranny and tcase.
My buddy here is about to buy one. Commercial grade. I can't justify one since I usually send these out for rebuild and they come back clean

It's a cool one for sure. Crazy how many styles they produced for sure.

I took the day off yesterday and ran 3 tanks out of my backpack blower and burned all of the seasons leaves off. This am I was predisposed at a funeral.

I got back and took all of the parts to powder.

Got home to some parts. The box looked scary but the radiator is A-OK.

I made a call to Sam, the owner and gave him an update and got him a little closer to understanding where we are on the budget. Henceforth we agreed to expand the project to include all new steering parts, suspension and a 4Plus tire carrier.

I just sat down and ordered about $3000 more in parts. I should have most everything I need to stay busy on this thing for a few days while stuff starts to trickle in.

Cowboy says "get busy old man!"
