Nicely done, done all exterior lights, most interior, haven't gone into dash yet (lazy) nice write up. Dash is next, and the JDM side markers are cool as well. I got a set from one that ended up on this cash for clunkers s*** deal that the "gov" put on. Got those and a few parts, mad a template and presto JDM side markers. Well done!

:beer::beer:

Ok, I may have gone overboard on this one. I think I found the limit of brightness when measured on a scale of comfort.

I added double the LEDs to the two stock dome lights and the additional one in the cargo area. The two 48 SMT boards are just super glued together and the wires of one soldered to the other.

When compared to the lighting on the house, you can see just how bright the light is in the 80.

There is an extra courtesy light in the front door. Other than that, the only change was to add the LEDs. Keep in mind, you are looking through tinted glass in the rear windows. The cargo area is stupid bright now.

nice
and
insane

i like it!!

i still think you should come up with something for the inside of the hatch door so when its open you can slide the drawers out and have light shining down into them from the hatch.....I mean seriously you can't even see what kind of beer that is on the tail gate

hehehehe I love adding fuel to the fire

I haven't read back through this whole thread, so you may have already done this, but have you done any "courtesy lighting" in the footwells? Most cars used to have these (actually, they were often times options - remember when those used to be available individually?), but many now don't. Just wondering how difficult it'd be to add some of those - and where.

I haven't found that perfect solution yet but my thoughts are to have something that looks stock.

The extra courtesy lights added to the front doors lights the foot well but I may add another under the dash. For now, I open the door a bit if I drop something and it illuminates the area pretty well.

Found a new fun mod looking at a '94. Apparently the '95 was cost reduced because all the circuitry is there but it is missing the LEDs. I swapped the bits from both and soldered in some blue LEDs. :grinpimp:

I just installed the superbrightleds.com dome lights in my 91 and it is an amazing difference. About halfway between treeroot and stock IMO.

How does one take apart the rear defrost switch on a TLC 80 series? All the other switches have easily replaceable bulbs except the rear defrost. Anyone have instructions, or pictures?

Mine is the Land Cruiser dash with the bigger buttons.

So anyone know how to disassemble the older style defrost switch? I just need to replace the bulb but this thing won't come apart.

Try this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/441859-early-type-defrost-switch-repair.html

I have the same LED's as treeroot and mine are not as bright in the dash. I am wondering if the dimmer is bad.

More pics for reference. You can see in the 2nd pic the cover needed to be notched to fit over the new relay tabs.

I bought this NAPA part and my turn signals still looked like a Disco each time I used them. I finally ordered "LED bulb Flasher Unit-CF13JL-02" from superbrightleds.com and problem solved! My blinkers are back to normal. This is drove me crazy each time I used them but problem is gone!

Treeroot - That is an awesome find! I was just wondering about putting lights in those driverside window switches.

Also, with all your LED experience, how do you think red LEDs would look in an 80? I was thinking of doing a red LED theme in my 80, like Audi has in their models. I am keen on this as red light is very good for night time. I am curious as to how it might look, especially in the dash gauge cluster.

I just got a used drivers door switch assembly set from a '93. It too had the LEDs in it. I simply plugged it in and they light right up.

No soldering or anything else required.

Can anyone with a '93 or '94 post up as to wether or not the front passenger door and rear doors have factory illuminated window switches?

Thanks

Yes, I have a 93 and mine illuminate. I wish my 2010 Tundra was illuminated!

Anyone else having a problem with the longevity of the LED's ?

I've done mine a year back and I've had 4 dash backlights die and probably 4 of the switch Led's die.

The only LED's that have been faultless are the one's I soldered into the heater control unit.

Failure is random rapid flashing followed by a complete failure.

Red would look great. As far as night vision goes, I read an article when I was planning the blue and the thought was that the turquoise that Gm uses was the best. The blue I have was reported to cause fatigue. I know the blue LED lights on the Christmas tree really messed with my night vision but, for some reason, my dash lights do not.

...yes.

I am going to find a way to add a capacitor to the dimmer circuit to reduce the voltage spikes when starting the car. Short term solution is to turn off the headlights when starting the car.

Has anyone measured just how high the voltage spikes on engine start are ?

I'd be interested in what you come up with as this is getting expensive :p

I want the blue lights look in my 92... How different are the dash and gauge setups? Can someone who has done this mod on a 91-92 cash in?
