Attempting the next best engine swap for 80s IMO (2 Viewers)

Brother you are a swapping machine.

I started reading this thread said what nut would swap the diesel OUT of an 80. Saw the v8 and thought ok fair enough. LM2 shows up and now I'm over here subscribing. LM2 is a pretty cool platform IMO.

Yea my stock fuel tank doesn’t know what to think hahaha

heck yea some questions instead of opinions lol

Cruise control is doable. I don’t think the factory stalk will work, but swaptime makes a cruise control module with buttons you can mount on your dash or center console. What I am going to try to do is buy a modern Toyota steering wheel (2020 Camry to be exact) and use Trailteq’s adapter (whenever he can ship to the United States) I’ve already been in contact with him about it. And I want to use the radio controls and cruise control on it. I think that would be awesome

AC is easy, GM compressor everything else Toyota. I had it running in the LT1 and it was great. I just got to finish making the hoses. I’ll probably get that done next week or so
I thought the AC should be simple enough, but I wanted to be sure.

I wonder about the stalk. At the end of the day, the factory stalk is just 4 momentary switches (right? One up, one down, one back and the on/off button - though I can't remember if that's momentary, or if it latches... yes I could absolutely walk outside and check 😆 ). I don't think that would be any different than dash buttons, just find the right wire colors in the wiring diagram and sub them for the buttons.

One of the things I've always liked with Toyota is how intuitive that cruise stalk is, so I would be very motivated to keep the original or use a another similar Toyota option. I've never really liked radio buttons on the steering wheel (or any other buttons for that matter), but that's me. I'm very happy with my transplanted Scion head unit: touch screen AND a volume knob. Best of all worlds. 🤣

The cruise control stalk is more complicated than that. I believe it uses a resistor ladder.

This is an amazing thread. I can't believe you pulled off that swap as fast as you did. And the combination of the LM2 and the 10 speed transmission sounds amazing-- although I have wondered about that oil pump belt and the computer complexities. And I have always wondered how complicated those engines were and how hard they would be to swap -- the pictures of the engines I have seen look a bit crazy.

Few questions---- and sorry if this has been asked before--- was there a particular reason why you went with the LM2 and not the newer LZO?

And do you think that the LZO is also viable option, or would it be more difficult? It seems like the computers get more complicated every iteration.

I am hoping that these engines remain popular and thus become widely available in the future. It is always good to have options.

Great questions. So after you start taking off all the unnecessary things on the engine it’s a very simple diesel engine. So the LZ0 looks to be a great engine but unfortunately it’s a GM global B engine. They started doing that in like 2022 or something like that. Computers are more complex. That’s also when GM started using turn knob gear selectors on their transmissions, so you can’t just swap those without using all kinds of extra stuff, maybe one day

It absolutely does. It's a common method for builders to use 2 wires to get all the cruise buttons through the steering wheels slip rings and to the PCM/cruise computer.

I guess I must haave been aware of that at some point, but had forgotten. I think I remember hearing that Lutz Auto will modify the resistor ladder because some of the Toyota swaps don't get along without modification. What are the odds that the GM stalk uses a similar arrangement and may just need resistor changes?

Can you give a quick tutorial about how GM structures their engine families currently? What does “global B engine” mean in the grand scheme of things?

Thanks!

Sure. That’s great. These are literally all spam/selling-you-shït websites. The internet sucks donkey ballz usually.

I want a human practitioner to explain it. Like I do with Toyota systems. This guy seems to know his stuff. I’d rather hear it from him.

You mentioned a vacuum switch from a Volvo, what is the part number or year & model the switch came from?

Ok small update, so I pulled a 2000 pound trailer 300ish miles this weekend, 60% of it on the highway and it got 20mpg on the dot. And this was taken off GPS miles instead of relying on gauge cluster because it’s off a little. This was also on a “test” tune because I don’t have that completely ironed out yet. So I’m impressed with that, can’t wait to see what unloaded on the interstate will do.
