Hi all,

New to all of this so hopefully someone can help me out. I have an fj40 and would like to swap my axels with fj60 axles. My question is can the fj60 axels just bolt onto my fj40. The fj60 has 3.73 gears and I am unsure what mine are. What will I need to do for this conversion. If you need more info let me know. Thanks for your help!

The 60 series axles are wider and the spring perches are a different location...they would need cut off and rewelded.
Alot of work if all you're looking for is the front discs.

I believe the front outer knuckles, disc brake parts, hubs, as well as the third members with the 3.73 gears will all swap into your 40 axles if that is what you are looking for.

You should have 4.11 ratio in your current axles.

Yes, everything should swap over. I might give your 3.73 set a home if you don't want them.

Is it possible to just mount the fj60 axels onto my fj40 and not use the 40 axels?

Yes, look above they already mentioned you could but it's a lot more work.

This. Plus you would have to alter the frt housing or your frt frame to out board your spring frame mounts, because of the offset of the pumpkin is in the way of the spring location on the pass side. The search function and FAQ's at the top of this 40-55 section is your friend. This is a common swap but there is work and fab is involved.

You need to outboard your spring and shackle mounts OR cut off and reweld the spring perches, not both. IIRC the springs are also a bit wider, so your mounts and shackles have to be changed to fit.

Unless you "French" the P/S side spring perches into the axle housing you'll be outboarding the springs. Frenching requires a little more technical expertise to get the caster angle correct and stay away from the ring gear, and almost assures you'll be completely disassembling the housing to prevent metal debris from getting where it doesn't belong.

The 60 thirds will most likely be 4:11, but have the advantage of a fine spline pinion.

think 60s are 3.73 and 62 is 4.11 both fine spline pinions.

1/79 Toyota only imported 3.70:1 diffs in the US market until 8/87 when the FJ62 started. Those were 4.11:1 again

The pinion changed from coarse to fine spline during 1978. 75 would have coarse spline.

8/84 the flange pattern changed. Would depend on when the diff was made if the driveshafts from a 75 would bolt up to them.
