Out with the old! Pulled the engine trans and transfer case today! Started sanding the 2f valve cover to polish. Picked up my rebuilt radiator today. Plugging away.

I need some help. I have been searching the forum and can't find any good pictures. I was wondering if any of you have pics or know a thread about modifying the transfer case crossmember from an fj60 to fit a fj55? I just need to see what others have done to get some ideas or inspiration.

I was also wondering if people beef up the motor mount brackets on the frame? The fj60 brackets seem much stronger and I feel like I should do what I can to strengthen the brackets on the pig.

Next, would you ad some diagonal bracing at the front of the frame where the steering center arm used to be if you were adding power steering? The FJ60 has these diagnal bracing but the fj55 does not.

1) No, I haven't seen that.

B) I've seen that with V-8s, not with Fs...

III) Yes, exactly what I have

On the transmission mount, I think they just cut it down on each side, because the 60's frame is wider and weld some heavy duty angle to the 55 frame, then bolt up.

Don't do like me and make some crasyazz mount, that took two weeks and I still don't like it.

If going with the stock trans. rubber mount, look at getting a new one, as the rubber seems to break down.

this^^^the mount isn't that difficult to do, just don't weld it in place;) I am looking at Marlins new transmission mounts- they may work on cruiser cases and use suspension type rubbers. If his don't fit, it should be easy enough to fab a version of his that does...http://www.marlincrawler.com/armor/crossmember/crossmember-mount-hd

Ron, I just looked over your crossmember and I was wondering how you attached it to the frame. Is it through bolted? And how come you went with those bushings instead of the fj60 mount... Wait are you using a toyota transfer case?

I wanted to reinvent the wheel, and I used the same type of bushing for the motor mounts. The bolts go trough the frame and are sleeved with DOM tubing. The frame makes some bends, right there and a body mount is there. Lots of fun.

I made the driveshaft loop, too low. If I keep it, I'll redo that loop.

The transfer case I used, is a '86 split case.

I was reading about All Pro's t-case mounted disc parking brake. I think they offer a t-case mounted mount.

I have a mount but need a crossmember. People say they modify the fj60 crossmember but I just wanted to see actual pictures of it or other solutions.

Sorry, I meant to say that I think they offer a crossmember as well in that mount...

There is a build on Pirate where the guy cut up their crossmember to mount in his 40. I'll look for it.

Not sure if these guys do Cruiser cross members: http://www.4xinnovations.com/Drivetrain_c_29.html

Well it has been a while since I have had any time to post. Done some work but mostly taking care of biz and projects around the house and family time.

I have been cleaning and painting parts in preparation for getting this thing back on the road. Got the oil pan, timing cover, brake calipers, knuckles and hubs sandblasted, primed and painted.

I have decided to outboard the springs to match the front perches so I need to make some braces.

I have also decided to move the rear perches in on the axel to match the pig spring spacing. Turns out the perches on the fj60 were 3.5" wide and the fj55 were 3" wide so I made new perches. Cut off the fj60 perches and welded up my new ones.

Nice looking weld. Any reason you moved the front hangers and not the rear? Something I should know.

Thanks! Well I figured moving the perches was the way to go on the rear as it is easy. there are just the perches on each side to move which was better than moving all four spring mounts out.

On the front I liked the idea of the of the wider stance (I will not be rock crawling and so do not need the flex) and did not like the idea of notching the pumpkin to make room for the perch. Not sure if it would make sense if you were going SOA but I am staying SUA so I haven't really played with it.

Test fit the rear end today, felt like I was finally doing something... Then I had to take it out again. Need to enlarge the holes in the perches and make brackets for the sway bar end links. Then paint. Here are some pics.

Pinion angle looks good.

This one shows the tire location in the wheel well which I like a lot more than stock.

This one is sad, showing the level of disassembly...

Started working on shifter for the transmission. The original 3spd one would not work in the 4spd and I do not like the look of the new stick. So I cut them apart to get the new base and the old top. I'm a little worried that they are hardened and that I may have weakened it by welding on it but here it is. Just need to grind and paint it up now.

Napster,

I've welded a half dozen over the years and none ever broke. I don't believe the metal is hardened. You beveled the edges and got good penetration with the weld, good to go.

Finished product. This 4spd knob has been sitting on my desk for the past few months as a constant reminder that I need to work on my pig. Now it has grown a shifter. Maybe a trans is next?
