I was just reading about them. I think I may hunt some down. Seems like most people complained because they were too soft, but that is just what I want!!

They are fairly soft but I like the ride, nice and smooth. I don't go around the corner fast so no big deal. The TJM progressive spring with fox shocks have performed incredibly well both on and off of the road.

The softness is interesting. On Summits website - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/tjm-770rr80c - it says the spring rate is 385 in/lbs. Which seems stiff...

Good to know. I think I'll order a set.

It's been a couple of weeks, any news on springs?

i did hear that Red Line cruisers in Colorado Springs is going to be carrying Auto-craft suspension. im looking into their coils right now, could be a good option too!

Someone just email me when and where I can get 4 decent quality remote reservoir shocks for a 2.5" lift for around a grand, for icing on the cake make a cheap rebuild kit for them too!

Darren M. @AutoCraft Aus PM me last week to let me know that Redline Land Cruisers is the official USA distribution of the Slinky coils & they also have the full Stage 1 & stage 4 kits coming.
I just got off the phone with Justin to confirm this information. Justin said they are about 3 weeks out, but did confirm there is definitely 15 sets in a container coming this way.
I'm pretty pumped!
I'm on the list to get a set of 70mm fronts for my rig.
I hope the 80 series market is ripe for a new generation of suspension other than the old school stuff we currently have.

Yea in thinking about grabbing a set of front and rear coils!

This was a really good thread with a lot of great information. I stumbled onto it while researching shock options for my FZJ80/LX450 chassis based project....

I am using a complete 1996 LX450 chassis and building a FJ45-esk body on top. It is getting a 2013 LC9 aluminum 5.3 with a 6L80E mated up to a Land Rover LT230 transfer case. The axles have the factory locker option.

This picture was taken at FULL bump with a 40" tire and the proposed FJ40 ( based ) body position. I have pulled the coils and the 'soft' rubber bumpstops so it is sitting metal on metal. The tires will be able to clear the body at full bump lock to lock.

It is my understanding that the 'stock' LX450 coils are about as soft as you can get. That is where I would like to start for springs. I do not really need any 'lift' on this chassis over stock to fit the tires. I suspect that I may pick up about 1-2" of 'lift' from the reduction in sprung weight vs the stock vehicle. If my estimates are close. This vehicle should be 4000-4500lbs when finished....and front biased when empty most likely. While the large tires and wheels add overall weight, sprung with should be drastically reduced over stock. Most of the body that I am building.....front fenders, doors, top, and the bed are all going to be 1/8" 5052 aluminum. The body is also going to be rather minimalistic and compact. I even went as far as 'pinching' the body at the doors to reduce the overall body width down to about 55.5" wide. Anyhow...

I am basically wondering what my options are for shocks and springs that would give me the lowest ride height with about 10-12" of shock travel. I suspect the front end will be sitting a bit low with the stock springs in both ends. I can add a 1" spacer easy enough in front under the coil 'cone' to level the vehicle.

It looks like the stock shocks are a little short. I have 1-1.5" of extra shock length that I am not using on both ends....even at metal on metal with the bumpstops removed.

I would like to maintain some spring preload if I can at full droop. It looks like the stock spring had about 1.5" of preload with the stock shocks.

Does anyone happen to know what that longest/softest/shortest spring option was for the J80 chassis?

Icon, Are you willing to help with valving in a custom application like this?

Thank you for the help.

I would start with fj80 springs 1st if you can find a decent used set. They are no longer available new. Also try the dual rate OME stock height springs 861/862. You will like them better than used stockers in my opinion.
Luv the J4 Toyota body, you can do so many options... 40, 45, 45 extra, 47, Troopy etc...

Thank you. I am doing a FJ45-esk pickup cab....about 3" longer than 'stock', the pinched doors, body line adjusted slightly, custom doors, trimmed rocker panels, and the custom top 'pulled down' a little bit more over the windshield frame. On the front clip I am building small aluminum fenders that will sit right below the hood and changing the grill shape to make space for the tires. The bed is going to be a very small aluminum 'step side' looking thing. The majority of the body is going to be all hand built. I only have the cowl, hood, and windshield that is 'stock' at this point.

I have all the stock LX450 springs. They seems to be as good a place to start as any? Does anyone know if they are any lighter in rate than the FZJ80 stuff? or earlier FJ80 stuff? If my weight guess is correct. I am looking for the longest possible spring with the lightest possible rate.

There's some really good threads here on mud that fit your exact question of stock springs. Yes LX springs I've read are definitely softer. You have a build thread started yet? Post up a link.

I will dig around for some more stock spring info.....sooooo much to dig through.

I don't get over here as much as I should. There really isn't a ton of 'stock' J40 or J80 stuff in my build so I never bothered to start a build thread here. I do have a thread going over at Expo with nobody seems interested in. And another at Pirate hidden in the Willys section. My last build was an old flat fender and I have a lot of time vested in that section of the board.

Just spent some time on the phone with Justin at Redline. As most of you know Redline will be the US distributor for the Autocraft Slinky suspension kits. Justin said they'll be posting pre-order information for these kits next week on Redline's website and probably here on MUD also. Sounds like kits will be available in the next few weeks-month.

Here's the info I've got so far. There will be a Slinky Intermediate kit (Stage1) that will include coils, 2" smooth body Icon (autocraft spec) shocks, sway bar spacers, bumpstop spacers. Coil options from what I was told will be 50mm, 70mm 75mm. The "Ultimate Touring" coils are a higher spring rate for heavier loaded 80s. I don't have details on the Stage 2-3 kits and how those differ but the Stage 4 is essentially the same as the other kits but include 2.5" CDC piggyback reservoir (with adjustment knob) Icon shocks.

I'm really looking forward to trying these out. Crossing my fingers that they are here in time for Cruise Moab.
