Dobinson twin tube shocks: $130 a piece.

Wow $130 dollar for a twin tube shocks?????? Aren't those things usually 30 dollars each? Rancho rs50000 twin tube shocks are 40 each and Monroe are 30 each(who makes OME).
At $130 price range there are soooo many good choices now and non of them use the old twin tube technology. Fox, king and icon all have 2.0 mono shock with aluminum body for that price or less.
I know my RS900036xls are done after about 13 monthsWhere did you find Rancho's for that price? I had to stack coupons with AA and buy them one at a time to get the 9000's for $75 a corner.
Even now on a RockAuto special price the 5000's are just over $45 and the 9000's are just over $85 and the Monroe twin tubes are both over $80.
The cheapest Icon is $637 a set, hardly close to $130 step up to a stage 2 and they're $500/corner Performance Shock Systems - ICON Vehicle Dynamics
You can get Fox for about $130 but there has been more negative feedback on them than I'd like to see, I bought my Rancho RS9000XL's before I searched about them here and they also don't have a lot of fan base but they've treated me really well and still going strong after 4 years.
I want to move to a res shock but not for $500 each, that's just insane, if I'm going to pay ANYWHERE near that they'll have to be the LAST shock I buy and have a lifetime exchange warranty and not one that I'll have to wait weeks for like Fox.
If you have a secret source for these shocks at a buck thirty or less please do share because I'm guessing once past the 5 year mark my Rancho's will be needing replacement, if not I'll happily buy them again since I can do all four for about $300.

My rancho rs9000's soak up all the bumpy stuff all day long, they just suck in general as the rig feels too soft even with slee medium front and heavy rear coils. May also be due to the rear two shocks being molested a bit by my sway bar.4wheels parts have the rancho on sale often and sometimes buy 3 get 4th free. Fox is 120 each shipped to your door. Fox 2.0 resi shocks are 230-250 each shipped to your door. Icon was just on sale with 15% off and kings price also depends on the seller. PM me if you want to look into kings, also worth every penny. Monroe twin tubes can be had for cheap just wait for sales also, all their econo shocks are all twin tubes. Mono tube shocks require more precision and better seals and therefore more expensive. Seriously twin tube shocks are pure garbage and they were cool in the 90s.
I had the 9000xl adjustable shocks also. They were pretty good when I had 33s and stayed on the road. Once I went to heavy 35s and started to do more off-roading then they were not adequate when it comes to rebound. My fox on the other hand the rebound is spot on and fantastic on just about every type of terrain especially with bigger bumps and dips.
Here is a test, find a nice dip on the street or dirt and hit it at 20-30 miles an hour. The ranchos and OMEs will buck you and hence most people go really slow on then. After I changed out my shocks to fox, the dips are fun to charge through. No more bucking horse! Ride quality through washboard are night and day better with fox......seriously, not even remotely close. Now I charge through dirt washboards rally style(safely of course), so much fun!
My rancho also started to rust after 2 years and I'm in SoCal. Pretty disappointed with the 9000 shocks when it comes to off-road performance and quality.
@Qball what Fox shocks are you running, where did you purchase, and did you have them valved specifically for your rig ?

I drive through a parking lot full of speed bumps and it soaks them up no problem, and I wish I had never fallen for the iPhone gimmick. Hype is just that. The 9000xl are not bad for the road and mild stuff. And biggest problem is lack of rebound, try the test I mentioned and you will see what I mean. Seriously the technology and material used in these old shocks can't compare to the new shocks. For about the same price the fox has brushed aluminum shock body(much cooler), machined and anodized aluminum shock ends. Compare that to rough steel tube and 2 welded steel loops, and this is just the outside! Valving is spot on for the fox.
Just like my old blackberry worked fine but just can't compare to my new iPhone 6plus when I want to do more than just make a call and check email.

Well, my 80 is my daily driver as well as my wheeler. It wasn't built to sit on a trailer by any means but it wasn't built to pound pavement all the time either. It does a pretty damn decent job of both. My problem with the Rancho shocks is that my springs were too tall and too soft and my rig too heavy. I ran them a solid year like that. Then I put my rear sway bar back in a few months ago with no drop brackets so it was pretty close to the shock bodies. Then I did some wheeling and noticed the ride was compromised and that my sway bar put a diagonal Channel into both rear shock bodies. I need to order new shocks and see if it fixes my lean to the right. Didn't have the issue of lean prior to installing my SLEE 6" springs, which net me a 2" drop over my 7"TJM springs. Funny how heavier rate 1" shorter springs dropped the ride 2", regardless... I am in the market for new shocks for a 5" lift lol, so I will be watching this thread.Hey as long as you are happy with it, to each their own.
I didn't didn't get the fox for speed bumps and parking lots but if that's what you encounter the most then you got the right shock for the right application.
