moving on to plan for painting the bed. I want this truck to last forever, so while I have it off, I plan to sand, prime and truck bed liner (monstaliner) under the bed. That I will do black. Then I will paint the sides blue, then paint the bed. That is the question.... I think I want to paint with color matched blue monstaliner, but where should I end it? It may look better to stop right before the top edge, but for protection, I think it would be better to cover that top edge.

Thoughts?

I would use monstaliner up to the bottom of the top rail seam (maybe 2"+ from the top of the bed). Just my 2 cents.

Are you asking about over the edge or short of the top? Here is a picture over the top

Over the top of the rail for sure. If you're worried about the thick texture looking funny or too aggressive, see if you can't knock it down a little....maybe smoother on the rail/sides of bed then heavier on the floor.

I'm going to Raptor line my bed I think.....I'm getting pretty good at shooting a very light texture coating. Looks really nice.

Exactly what I was needing. Thanks,

Any idea on paint codes for these out of the US cars without a descriptive VIN badge on paint codes?

You can tint the Raptor to whatever color you want...maybe raptor on sides and rails, Monstaliner on the floor? Raptor is so easy to work with...super nice DIY product. If you try Raptor, get their "Pro" gun so you can dial in the texture. You can go from a super fine texture to aggressive.

If you use the truck at all there is a 100% chance you'll end up scratching the top of the tailgate and an equally high chance you'll damage the tops of the side rails. Might as well protect those areas and save yourself some grief.

Mine is so scratched that I will be using Raptor up and over the edge covering all three sides of the square rail.

You can color match Monstaliner too. Actually, I am not a fan of Raptor, as I had it start losing adhesion after about 5 years. I am anal when it comes to paint prep and using instructions (datasheets) as I worked my way through college at a paint shop.

I have been spraying Monsta on all my projects lately....

Interesting on the Raptor....any pics of how fine of a texture you can get the Monstaliner? I've never tried their stuff.....I was going to try some Al's Liner but always go back to Raptor.

I will take some pictures. It cures with humidity, so in my climate dries much faster than raptor, which is good, but bad as you have to clean the gun out between 2nd and third coat. Basically, if you want it smoother, you out mixture in gun, then shoot the last coat, if you want more texture, you let it get toward the end of the working time and shoot....

So, here is my favorite texture... what I call a hard orange peal. hides all defects, while not big chucks for dirt to fall and adhere to....

We did the front in 2017 and the truck bed in 2018 (after we made it), and I did it at 2am and was tired, so did not try to match the texture. Both the green and black were at the second spray, so about 30 -45 minutes after mixing the products.

If it were my truck, I would have sanded the black and resprayed, but my son is happy with it....

Initially I planned to just prime the last section where I welded, but then when I started sanding realized that the primer is so thin that to do this right I needed to prime and truck line entire bottom .... so for the next six hours of my life, scuffed and sanded with 120 grit the entire bottom of the bed
