I’m glad I have a spare crap bed to cut first to make sure I get my measurement right for the permanent bed.

If I recall there was a zig zag somewhere in that cutting process

Progress.

Where all the spot welds easy enough to see for drilling? I did a quick look yesterday on mine and they didn’t seem all that noticeable.

Prep for welds.

Probably, vertical welds on a frame or body are pretty much a no go across the board in the customization of vehicles.

Cheers

I was concerned where the front mount location... was unsure if it was in the same location, so I made a CAT (cardboard assisted template) to see if they are in the same spot, and they were....

Just used a marker to locate the holes and cut and slide some long bolts in them, and was able them to line this up with the underside of the bed.

Here you can see the location of the bolt...

Here you can see the same mark from above with the mount held in place... so the key thing learned here was that I need to chop my 4 1/4 inch from the rear half of this mount.

I need to shorten the structure for the front mount by 4.25 inches, but there is not a straight chunk to remove, so had to get creative on how to cut without moving the existing hole.

First made a jig to hold the mount square... this is the stock length, then I measured the 4.25" and locked it in position.

The blue paint is my cut design, notice the sides on the top of the photo are angled, so did not want to cut through that area....

Here is the mount in the jig with the shorter length.

a little more clean up work to do; however, almost ready to weld.

FYI, some of you know that I decided to sell this. I want to work on my 45 and 73 projects, and this does not fit for my intention for my kids learning stick shift anymore. The prior owner is interested in buying it back, and I promised him first dibs on it. If that does not work, I will post up in the for sale area.

I totally understand, a little bummed as you were getting this thing awesome.

It will still be awesome... i do hope to see it at the annual meet and greet next year. I will just be in a 73 with a little LS love under the bonnet.

question to the masses. From the mining truck bed, i have a set of nice tail lights, but they come wired with a harness. Anyone find the matching other side of the wiring harness, so I can hook them up? I could just cut and solder them in, but seems like a waste with such nice new parts.

Do you remember what the part numbers were for these seals? I am about to replace on my 73, it's starting to whistle when I hit hwy speeds.

@WarDamnEagle said.... You need those three which are front and side “seals”. You also need 63161-90K00 which is a continuous weatherstrip for all 4 sides.

Well on my FZJ75 they just plug into the body harness. Part number 82162-60174

Yeah, I know some people are smart enough to know how to find the part numbers for the ends.... @Onur @Coolerman

looking for the female end of this plug . I searched for a 2010 79 series... not sure exactly what year this bed is from... came up with part number 81550-60422 for the light. 82162-60B90 for the harness.

moving on to plan for painting the bed. I want this truck to last forever, so while I have it off, I plan to sand, prime and truck bed liner (monstaliner) under the bed. That I will do black. Then I will paint the sides blue, then paint the bed. That is the question.... I think I want to paint with color matched blue monstaliner, but where should I end it? It may look better to stop right before the top edge, but for protection, I think it would be better to cover that top edge.

Thoughts?
