I own a GS400 with the A650e. You’ll definitely want to do some valve body upgrades on that thing. It’s probably the laziest transmission I’ve ever felt and I wouldn’t trust it to handle a Land Cruiser without a beefed up VB and a stand-alone control unit.

It would be something we can do however with the current number of projects we have it is already very overwhelming. If things slow down, sure why not.
All the local shops I tried have failed me in my quest to complete this project. They simply refused to take it on.

I am slowly building up the pile of parts needed. It will be a slow process for sure, not something that needs to be completed by 11:59 on 12/31.

Currently looking to get a cheap tranny to see if it even fits (bolts up at both ends).
Why cheap?
1) if it does not work out, my wife won't kill me in the worst possible way
2) it needs to be rebuild anyway

Found some on CL for $300 from a dismantler around here. I hope I can do better than that.

Yes, that's the plan.
It comes with a series of problems I am aware of.
I know it needs to be rebuild and beefed up to handle not necessarily the power, but the work load on it.

The A650E is a No Go! It’s No. 2 One Way Clutch is located in its tail housing, where it’s in the main housing of A343F.

A650F 5 Speed for 1FZ

A343F is 33" long.
Mark's adaptor 8.07"

31.57"

roughly 1.5" wiggle room for the engine to tranny plate.

Just to close this loop:
ATI 1FZ bell housing is made for their 2 speed PowerGlide, can be adapted to 4L65 with a plate and to a 4L85 - with machining on the pump and case!

The 6L80 is an absolute no go because of pump body machined into the back of the bell housing! (Which are surprisingly cheap)

Where did you come up with 33”?

My A343F is 28.5 from engine mount surface to transfer case mount surface.

ATI has a complete kit to adapt the TH400, it includes everything needed; starter, flywheel, adapter, bell housing, etc. I would think it would easily bolt to the 4L80 series since they are based on the TH400. Did you ask them about that kit?

I asked about their bell housing to 6L80. They said it bolted to their 2 speed, could be adapted to 4 speeds as noted.

As I was posting this morning, I just realized the bell housing in the picture look like a SBC pattern.

I just emailed again, asking specifically about the adapter plate, if it made the back of the 1FZ look like a Chevy and if the 1FZ could be bolted to 6L80 with it.

It’s funny, I spoke to them on the phone and emailed them, they never mentioned that the bell housing in the 1FZ kit was a SBC pattern and just to get the plate.

Called them, again.

The bell housing included with that kit, while basically a SBC pattern, is modified for the starter (notch in the picture?).

Speaking of starters, a stock starter will NOT work with their adapter plate.

Plate is 5/8” thick. They emphasized again and again it was designed for their 2 speed bell housing, and that modifications would be necessary for 6L80 and especially getting the flex plate right for 6L80, the spacing was different.

The tone of the conversation was basically that the kit is for their 2 speed race transmission and stop bothering them. They had no interest at all in other applications.

Yeah I am not interested in 6L80, but I would like the 4L80 so sorry it won't work for what you want.

Uhhhhhhgggggggggg, I would just go with a Cummins swap then all you tranny issues are solved :meh:

love watching those guys and their adventures. When we go to austrailia I want to meet up with them to hit some wicked costal tracks.

They are talking about putting it behind a diesel 80. Still no dice behind a 1FZ.

Funny to see this thread. Have a look on youtube. They discuss installing a 100 series transmission in a 80 series frame. And how to control it.

Well it ain't dead yet. @wardharris at Cruiser Brothers is the US distributor for Wholesale Automatics and there is an effort to get this done for the 80 series with a 1fz-fe. They are supposed to be having a trip to AU and a meeting with Wholesale, with the 5 speed topic on the plate.

Fingers crossed!
