If you need a hand with hard parts, send a message! (The kind made out of aluminum, not heavy lifting)

The bell housings share the same bolt pattern and bore diameter and are interchangeable.

BUT the 1FZ bell is much deeper, therefore the input shat is longer:

The input spline count and diameter are the same the same thought, the torque converter from the A650 will fit onto the A343. (I haven’t pull the TC off the 1FZ yet). It’s significantly larger than the one that came on the A650.

Speaking of the A650E, all the seller knew was that it supposedly came from a 2002 Lexus and was leftover from neighbors project.

Anyone know what motor “J2” on the bell housing would refer to?

The seller had no idea what model Lexus or engine it came with if it was a 4 or 5 speed.

Model No. “35-50LS”. At first I thought I was looking at a A350 from an old Lexus, but Googling, apparently that’s the code for the A650E.

The cases are the same length and look the same, with the exception of no mounting bosses for the transfer case shifter.

@Delta VS Thanks for your generous offer!

We’ll see how the insides of the cases compare. If the A343F and A650E main housings don’t interchange, but the A343F input and output shafts can be swapped to the A650E, we’ll need to figure out a mount for the transfer case shifter.

Output shafts, things are more interesting at this end (sadly)

A343F shaft is larger diameter and shorter and has a very different speed sensor “ring” with 4 teeth versus a lot more (will count later) on A650E.

The A650E has what I think is a floating bearing housing (cog shaped) that meshes with the tail housing. It interferes with the A343F tail housing bolting on.

I had to pull a snap ring on the shaft, then the speed sensor ring and then the bearing slide off.

The A343F tail housing was held on by 8 bolts, while the A650E’s only used 6 but all 8 holes were there and tapped. So the A343F tail housing bolts onto A650E.

The shifter linkage on both transmissions is located in the same place. Both of the have 6 positions (5 clicks as they are actuated). It looks like the existing shifter would work mechanically.

That’s all the pictures I have for now.

Send in requests for photos and measurements. The electrical connectors are different, I’ll add photos later.

The next big hurdle in this project is to get into the cases and see if the input and output shafts can be swapped (hopefully case as well).

Like I said, I am happy to add photos and measurements of the outside. But it could be weeks or months before I tear into them. (I have 3 running TLCs and lot of other stuff to get done before CM...)

I need to give a shoutout to @scottryana
and @Dragos80 for inspiring this project:

5 speed auto

Some great ideas, but that thread lost its steam with endless speculation and little hands on.

Also a shoutout to @wardharris
80 SERIES UPGRADE POLL - MANUMATIC?

I would definitely go with A760F (1st choice) or A750F (2nd choice) if he ever gets a 1FZ to A75/60F bell housing. The controller and shifter would be a bonus.

His kit would be much more doable if the bell housing bolts straight to the 1FZ along with a compatible flexplate/torque converter. The A750F came in 100s with the same transfer case as the 80s.

Even if I do figure out an A650 in an 80, it will require a donor A343F and a custom mix/match rebuild (good luck finding a shop to do that - @Delta VS ?)
