Yes - really poor paint job. Hack job really.

I plan on going Spring Green, a really light mint green from one model year in the 1960s. Not period correct, but I like it.

I was thinking spring (or fashion) green as well - such an awesome color on these trucks. Lately I've been leaning toward keeping mine white though - since most of my hardware is black anyway... Really eager to see how yours turns out! What was yours originally?

Mine was Rellow, or Yed, not sure which. Top is yellow, but tub and Manufacturer's Plate say red.

There are very few in the spring or the fashion green. I think they are neat colors. Fashion has more gray/white in it, no?

Love it when creatively packaged part come in the mail!

This is my first of two 3.70 3rd members arriving. Yee Ha.

Yea, it is fricking heavy.

Thanks Super40.

More wheels in the electrolysis tank.

Bought some Arm & Hammer "Super Washing Soda" at the grocery: $3.50 per 3.5 lb box. Cheaper than the pool chemicals by about 75%. Same stuff. Sodium Carbonate.

Finding I have to recharge the tank every time I remove a wheel. Strange. Not getting above 3 amps.

Man oh man. Just read you whole build thread. Looking at your join date you are way more proactive than I am :D. I sit back and think when I bought my FJ40 3 years ago what my plans were and how they have morphed into various versions based on my limited skills and knowledge as well as the availability of parts. Besides having the great therapy of going out to the garage and working with my hands and gaining mechanical knowledge and confidence I think is the single biggest thing I have been gifted with is a great group of like minded individuals. I have made several friends up here in Alaska and uncovered a hidden community of owners at the same time. Your rig is coming along great, and I see some things that you have done that I wish I had taken the time to figure out and do myself. Keep up the great build, and your wallet wide open. I think when I get done I will post my final build list and cost...and then my wife will remind me I could have bought a 66 Nova SS for what I put into it :steer:

LOL on the "wallet wide open." No joke - this is not for the faint of heart ($$) or the unskilled craftsman. Pick one, but better if you have both skill and $$.

Greatly agree on the like minded-ness of this group. This is one of the few ways 5 perfect strangers (VtgBeemer, ADistler1, Rainman, his friend who is buying his parts truck, and me) a few months ago ended up at dinner Thursday night in Nashville - from 35 to 65 (I'm being nice VtgBeemer), with backgrounds that couldn't be more different, but we have bonded on this.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Holy Sh!t you've spent 8 grand in parts? How bad was the 40 when you bought? Rig must be looking almost new now

This is why you should never, ever keep track of what you buy.....that's the best way to avoid being shocked by how much you spent for parts.

I accidentally kept track of my cable locker parts.... Ouch.

I have this type of hubs - ASCO.

Should I replace with Aisin if I can find some old ones? Going for very close to stock remember.

I believe those are stock for '76. Am I right Tom, Eddy or living in the past?

Those seats don't look stock to me. I believe stock seats in 1976 were not full-back seats (no integrated head-rest like those have).

I think you could get adjustable headrests (not sure about that) but the seats themselves were low-back. I also believe the stitching in the fabric was vertical, as opposed to horizontal.

Those look somewhat similar to the aftermarket seats offered by CCOT, but the stitching isn't right for those either...

EDIT:

This is a good example of what the stock buckets should look like for a 76 (I think)

Thanks Rick. Learning daily.

Not surprised on the need to pour gas into the carb to get it started--that's a weber trait--float bowl completely open to atmosphere-3 days and all the fuel evaporates(esp since there is no air cleaner on it) My vote is to go back to an oem carb--Aisan
Get that in the works while you check all the fluid stuff to make sure all the lube is ok.
Then drive it to see where your next fix should be
Body can wait a few til you have a good plan--you know the drill.

Sorry I chimed in on this thread so late--great build so far-sounds like you are well prepared for the onslaught

Hello all, lots of new FJ40 owners today. Glad to be one of them!

After some great advice on what to purchase, I ignored it all (j/k) and bought a once red (and yellow evidently), now peeling maroon '76. Got a great price on it at $4K, but it needs lots of love.

My question, where do I start?

Main question:
It has a Weber carb on it, but no air cleaner. I plan to buy the Australian Weber air cover that Sarge or someone recommended (the oval one). What do I do in the meantime (sister in Aus, hoping she can get one and ship it here)?

Second issue - to get it running, and drive it to get new tires (old ones are dry rotted - it has been sitting for a "couple" of years (like 5-10 maybe), I need to ensure it will start. Currently it requires starter fluid or gas to be poured into the carb to fill the bowl. What's up with that? Carbs are not that familiar to me.

Pics to follow. Point out what you see.

Before you say it - the Bezel is upside down. I know, I know.

Goat,
Thanks - appreciate input from everyone who has something to input!

Well, no response from them yet, but at least I'll research this before buying any used hubs.

I believe AISAN is the same thing as ASCO. I think I read somewhere that the full company name for AISAN is Aisan Sekei Co. (ASCO)... Food for thought - I may be misspelling all of that badly.
