If you could find a way to register diesel conversions in CA you'd be a very wealthy man.

I have an 80 series with a 1hz swapped in and I registered it in CA without a problem. It was no more difficult than doing a title transfer on a newly purchased used vehicle.

Go for it!

What transfer case comes in this combo?

What's a rough estimate for MPG with that setup in an 80?

With the manual, E (as in FTE), 24V and stockish 80- my guess wud be ~22mpg (US) DD driving.

Anyway, this engine shud put the owner at the top of the mpg game.

according to CA Smog, you can only register a diesel if it came from the same classification car. That leaves only one engine conversion, then 6.5 GM Turbo Diesel which came in 1/2 ton trucks and suburbans in the states. I've done a few of those swaps, and they're pretty amazing with 200hp and 360 lb/ft of torque. My clients are getting 18-23mpg in theirs

4bt's are for bread trucks, no thanks ;-)

This engine is going to make someone very happy. For now it's just eye candy at my shop

I get about 20-21 city and 21-23 hyw, but I only have 35's and I am not really hard on the skinny.

That is a myth. Completely untrue, based on my personal experience anyway.

Two years ago, I bought a formerly '91 FJ80 that had a 1hz/H151 swapped in. The guy who did it drove it for a month to shake it down, but he did not change the title to diesel. I would have to do that when I did the transfer of ownership.

I was a little nervous because I had heard stories similar to what Torfab said above, but the guy assured me it would be no problem and that he would give me a full refund if I was unable to register it.

I went to AAA in Northridge, CA, not a DMV. Not sure if that matters, but if it does, it would certainly be worth the $45 membership fee to get a diesel swap titled. It's worth it anyways. But I digress...

When I checked in and told the receptionist what I needed to do, without hesitation, he said I needed to see so and so. I felt that the fact he knew exactly who I needed to speak with suggested they had done this before, which I thought was a good thing. A few minutes later, my name was called.

After explaining what I wanted to do to the woman behind the counter, she asked if the truck was here. I told her yes, and to the parking lot we went. She asked me to open the hood, but when she looked at the motor she said "I can't tell by looking if it's a diesel", and asked me to start it up. When I did, she said "It sure sounds like a diesel, but just to be sure, can you remove the fuel cap?" A quick sniff confirmed that it was in fact an oil burner, and she told me we were all set. We went back inside to complete everything, and a couple weeks later, I got the diesel title in the mail.

The woman never looked or asked for any kind of identification on the motor. I did not have, nor was I asked for any kind of letter from the smog police. Nothing. It was exactly that simple.

Whew, that was a lot of typing! I do hope though, that any of my fellow California residents who are willing and able to get a diesel cruiser are not doing it because they don't think it can be registered.

I love the 1hz, but that low mileage HD-FTE makes me jealous!

The rules get bent all the time, for example people are driving RHD cruisers in the states, but according to the DOT it has to be 25 years old to be legally imported. This means someone didn't follow their check list properly. If you go to the CARB website, you'll see the rules posted.

The rules aren't always followed, and it's definitely better to ask for forgiveness than permission in those cases. I know there are tonns of people driving their diesel converted cruisers in Kalifornia... There are also tonns of people smoking pot...

For $65 ANYONE can get a medicinal marijuana card in CA and be legal.

torfab, has to be an OBDII 80 for this swap?

in this country, anything can be illegal, and anything can be legal, it just depends on your jury's interpretation of the law :hhmm:

It doesn't have to be OBDII, however a 93-97 will have the correct engine mounts.

I don't know about any of you guys, but this engine in my truck and the amount of money and love it would take to make it happen would have to be accompanied by written law stating that it was a legal swap. Any grey area swindling would just make me paranoid. I would hate to see this engine go into a crusher!

if you want to just get rid of the engine to end the Cali problems, I'll gladly dispose of it here in TN where nobody really cares what kind of engine is in there. Heck, I'll even pay the shipping fee.

Can someone explain to me the appeal of spending a bloody fortune on a diesel swap for an FJ80? I just don't get it. For the cost of the swap you can go buy a decent condition diesel truck. The 80 is not a good tow platform, the gas mileage increase is not huge and does not counter the high price for fuel, and it's loud on the trail. What are the pro's?

I acknowledge that almost all of your points are true. Most trade-offs do not add up. The one thing that I consider to be great about landcruisers is there ability to get you there and back. I have had some recent experiences with toyota diesels that only confirm how robust and well designed they are. I would want nothing else (cummins, GM, ford, isuzu, ect.) in a rig that I was taking out in the middle of nowhere. I have experienced first hand, how little it takes for these engines to run and get you home. The 1fz is a good engine, the 1hd is a great engine. You will most likely never recoup your investment in fuel savings unless you do the work yourself, but in my opinion, an 80 equipped with a 1hd is the truck that I would like to have out in the middle of nowhere when things don't go as expected. I think that kind of dependability has an appeal that is evidenced by how many people have chose to ignore the simple economics of the swap. Plus, it's hella awesome.;)

Why a 1HD-FTE w/ 5-spd manual? 'cuz I want what I can't have...

Common in the rest of the world, unobtanium here

Neddy, my next questions would be, have you gone through a CA registration renewal yet? Did the renewal require a smog check? And if so, how did that work out?
