wow! You have some skills sir! Great job so far!

TK

Thanks

No kidding. Thanks for taking and posting photos. Very nice.

Hopefully it can help someone

You are doing a great job of documenting every step. Your skills and Toyota experience show through out the rebuild. Cant wait to see it all wrapped up.
Keep up the great work.

PS This thread should be added to the FAQ for the 80 when your done.

Thanks

Excellent work

Thanks

Looks great so far! Did you blast the block? What did you do to clean out all the passageways?

Thanks. The only part of the block that was blasted was in the crank case, with all the oil ports taped off. I have some wire long wire brushes that I used to clean the passageways and I also had had the block cleaned by the machine shop.

Wow, not many things in the mechanical world as beautiful as a freshly machined rebuild...so pretty.

I agree

The bead blasting comparison is awesome!

Yeah it is a sweet tool, but every thing has to be so well cleaned after blasting. The beads get everywhere and stick to everything.

The skills on this forum is truly AMAZING! And when in the heck do you find the time? My wife yells at me just for changing the oil in my cars.

I wish I could quit my day job and take an intensive course on how to tear down and rebuild engines.

Yeah this is a great forum. No wife and I am a college student and classes have not gotten busy yet. Trying to get a bunch done before I get super busy. Engine work isn't too hard, mostly you just have to go for it.

Braaavo Man!

Thanks

You might also want to hit up 1-800 RADIATOR and get a CSF Radiator. It is a 3 core brass with a copper top and bottom instead of plastic.
https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/512298-koyo-radiator-resellers.html#post6895322

FWIW, I ordered a Koyo C-1917 radiator from Go-part on July 14th of 2011 ($264.00 including shipping), and that's exactly what I received. Sounds like they got your order mixed up, as mine has all metal tanks and a brass 3-core center.

Well I finally got a hold of someone at go-parts, not even sure why they have a phone number, no one ever answers.

Anyway, sounds like they are going to take back the PBI and send me a KOYO. I want to think that this was some kind of mix up, but I bet they were do this a lot, hoping people don't realize. It just better be here by the time Ia m ready to put it in.

I forgot to mention that when my block was decked they found that it was bowed like a smile. Anyone else heard of this before?

Toyota 1mm over sized pistons

Toyota rings are stamped making installation easy

plastigage before checking clearance

after, all the rod bearings were in spec.

Rebuilt the power steering pump, FAQ made this super easy.

More of what is to come, seat heater switches from a 95-2000 Lexus ES300. Color is perfect.

timing cover and chain

installed with FIPG and a new water pump

trying to be good about torquing everything to spec

new oil pump rotor

red grease helps keep these types of o-ring in place

cleaning out the old gasket material

Finally for today I took off the baffle on the valve cover because I was really worried that glass beads were trapped in there.

I drilled of the heads of the aluminum coming through the baffle. My plan is to drill holes and use rivets or tap them and use machine screws to hold it back in place.

Needless to say it was free of glass beads but I found it very interesting how one side was more dirty than the other.

everything is so shiny, I need to fetch my sunglasses!!!!

dayum man that looks amazing

Well, after about 20 emails and as many failed phone calls to go-parts I finally got this:

I haven't had a lot of time because of school, but I decided to try and port and polish the head....

Before any work, marked material to remove with the gasket

and a finished port

That reminds me, what is the make/model of your air compressor? That die grinder must suck down a lot of air!

Real nice work here.

The engineers at Toyota Industries would be proud of this.

That's what I was thinking...they would appreciate the attention to detail...this will be a fine running purr-monster of a 1fz-fe. little bit more power from the bore, deck and port work and just as, if not more, durable as a factory new motor.

This is the most amazing thread for someone that as of this date only has 36 posts!

WOW, I am very impressed.

Great rebuild! Want to rebuild mine!? I was going to ask which school you are attending, but when you mentioned what degree you are working on it ruled out WyoTech. I'm guessing either LCC or UW if you are going to school in town. Is that little fire cracker Barbara Haggey (sp?) still tearing up the streets of Laramie in her badass Camaro?

Thanks. Anything to please the toyota gods right

Thanks, I really hope this thing is reliable, it is one of my main goals... although I hope to see a little forced induction in the future.

Thanks. Go big or go home, I guess

Thanks, maybe if I had the time. If mine is running before spring break I will be happy.

Yeah I am a senior at the UW, so ready to be done.

Not sure about the Camaro. Did she go to tech? The turn around on those guys is quick.

No Tech for her, she is/was a local. I think her dad owns a local logging company or trucking company there in Laramie. They have bucks. She drag races an early Camaro ('67/'68/'69 don't remember which). It's badass. I had some good times in Laramie when I went to school there.

Not sure, I know the guy that owns the local snap-on truck has a daughter that drag races, but I don't think it is the same last name.

When and what school did you go to when you were out here?

Just an FYI, I found a pretty elegant solution to those two stupid front timing cover studs that go through the upper oil pan and into the lower timing cover (which basically prohibits one's ability to take the timing cover off with the engine in the truck and necessitates jacking the engine up off the mounts to remove the upper pan and cover).

The two studs do not have Torx heads while most of the other studs on the 1FZ do.

The two EGR studs are exactly the same size, thread and pitch, as well as length. The shank in the middle is the same as well.

So, I decided to use those studs on my customer's engine. Worked perfectly.

Here's the two side-by-side and also a nicely cleaned head. God, I love beautiful clean Aichi aluminum.....

:)
