I used these Marman Flanges on my exhaust. V-bands are more susceptible to leaks due to the heat warping the face. The Marman put the welding further away from the flange end. It’s also directional for flow and has a graphite gasket which isn’t really needed. I used it on the turbo discharge flange to down pipe and end of down pipe on run to muffler. Both sides of muffler for easy replacement. Awesome product.

Damn you.

Explain to me that funky donut section of pipe. I can’t envision them together.

And the faces of the flanges fit into each other... along that is where they’ve been found to warp? @cruisermatt.... have you heard this?
The Marman Flange has a male and female end so yes they fit into each other. The male side is on the motor exhaust side and female toward the tailpipe.
If you see from the picture the welding surface is about 1-1/2” to 2” away from the flange connection leading to a perfect seal. I bought mine from GBE Mandrel Bending exhaust shop in Oregon who showed me plenty of warped V-bands.
Don’t worry about it Felicity. I was just throwing these out there for food for thought.

The funky donut end is the male side that goes into the female with the graphite gasket sandwiched between. With it compressed together the band goes around it just like the V-band style. I’ll look for some pictures from my build.

Theoretically possible I guess, that's the first I've ever heard that though. I've never had an issue with the ~50 or so pairs of V-band connections I've dealt with :meh:

At the exhaust shop the owner showed me countless V-bands that had an exhaust leak. He doesn’t sell regular V-bands only the Marman style. For those in the Portland, Oregon area check out GBE Mandrel Bending.

Well if that isn’t a sales pitch then idk call me something sarcastic... fill in the blank, I suck at those sayings. But really... the leak was what, evidence of heat and carbon having escaped at the flange mating surfaces?

Considering the price difference between the two products it wasn’t a sales pitch just better quality part.

Welp seeing as I already bought two I’m just going to go w/ them.... if they’re more expensive maybe that’s a sign they really are a better product.

I’d go with them since you’ve got them. If you ever have an issue or anybody else does then now you know about the Marman flange.

So now I’m under the truck holding things here and there pondering the next right step w/ hanging the exhaust. Ran out and had the local welders look at my work, critique and show me how to lay the beads better. They hooked me up w/ a nice 24”x 6” or so rectangle of 1/8” steel so I can fabricate some brackets and have leftover for frame patches.
Also received used in great shape fuel line from @tmxmotorsports had had a great chuckle watching the ups driver take the package from the back through the front passenger door. Photo for fun! They arrived in great shape. Tommy packaged them up fabulously. Again I realize I’m not an average female when receiving and opening such deliveries bring me so much joy!

Looks like they didn't get bent... I got mad at the stapler missedthe wood and got me under my finger nail might be a couple blood spots in there then the tape didn't want to cooperate and i realized i had left over plastic wrap from shipping the old 2f out of the 60 so went after it with that. Happy to help

Yes, I’m thrilled they look great. Clean as heck too! You got lucky w/ that truck and I’m a damn lucky bystander! My son is going to beyond thrilled to stomp on all the air packets too!

I think you rock...!!!

I used the V band thingies...
After a few trips on washboard roads in the SW..... these leak, plus my shady welds don't help either....
Thanks for 411 @Hojack .....

I saw one them GBE vids... liked the history & explanation behind the product

Plumbing in a plumbing box - how appropriate. Looks like the packaging held up well though.

Recently did a compression test. I’m not thrilled with the results. What I realize now after all that head work two years ago I had done.... when looking at my cylinder walls and noting gray vertical lines but not detecting a change w/ my nail means dick. Vertical gray lines are wear groves regardless whether anything can be felt or not. The good is nothing changed and bad is nothing changed. Amazingly tho thruck holds great vac on a gauge and seemingly runs strong. Truck is loud in the video because I just threw some straight pipe back on w/o the muffler today to go grab some vintage metal rocking deck chairs from my friend who’s moving out of her bfs house.
Swung by my neighbors house who is tree guy and had him try starting my chainsaw I’d done a bunch of work on. No go. It wanted to but wouldn’t hold and idle and noted tons of fuel seeping out the backside of the exhaust manifold, right? Guess I gotta pull it apart again.

This is why I wouldn't ever check compression! Now it's going to bug you. But maybe it just needs a valve adjustment. Do that and repeat. My FJ40's old motor had about 110-120 across the board and ran fine for years (2001-2012) before I put in a new motor. With a fresh 2F, it feels like a race car in comparison! But old motors get worn out. Just the nature of it.

Those plugs look well done.

Keep up the good work and the updates!

I know now... your at least number three who’ve said ‘ignorance is bliss.’
I wanted to come home after running around to do an adjustment but the rain began yet again. I need to throw together a cheap carport or push a bunch of stuff back in my garage so I can park at least halfway in. I swear this rain is never going to let up. Possibly tomorrow I’ll get lucky.
And thanks for speaking up Drew!
