You already know this - but I’m in the run it as is - well, maybe tune the engine a bit and toss some new plugs in :)

On multiple occasions I’ve considered tossing my compression tester to make space in the drawer it’s in.I’ve hung on to it for the occasional 2 stroke boat motor, otherwise it’s fairly useless. It only tells you half the story, and usually the half you already know.

A cylinder leak down tester is a much better tool, and for those who don’t have either - I’d buy a good leak down tester and forget the compression tester. Run a leak down test on a cylinder and you can tell if you have wear and let’s you determine if it’s valve wear or ring wear, a bad head gasket or a giant hole in a piston. Knowing what’s worn let’s you fix the correct problem.

My oldschool auto mechanical teacher was a firm believer of this that was 30 some years ago compression test only really work if everything else is working correctly..

My son is going to beyond thrilled to stomp on all the air packets too

Kids are the same everywhere. I cant even get my packages open before they're wrangling over who gets to "pop the bubbles." 4 of the 5 will do it. And the 16yo looks on reminiscing about the good old days!

Great work as always. Lock-down test for sure, they're inexpensive at HF.

My wife does all the work, I get to hide in the garage, working on the cruiser......
I need to find me one of those, preferably the male gender.

So somehow I believe from just a chance compression test I missed another catastrophe. I pulled the valve cover today after running the truck till it was nice and hot. Air filter was my first WTF moment, inner paper material was stained tan at the inner rear ring. Air cleaner base revealed a pool of oil and coolant mix. Now I know why the lip of the PCV grommet often appeared wet. Rocker arm bolts all have same oil and coolant mix.
Truck did run for a bit in the driveway. Once I saw what was going on I stepped away. Slid my feeler gauge in just to see how they felt and found my intakes tight and exhaust loose. I didn’t bother to get it to TDC and do an adjustment at that point. Stuffed some rags in the plug holes, packed up my tools and closed her up.
I really need a gofundme for catching problems before they completely catastrophe. I’m really beginning to dislike learning the hard way.
Found my compression test from right before I pulled the head almost two years to the day ago. #1 in closest to my right side.

It’s possible that’s just condensation in the oil from not getting hot enough during cold weather starts.
It’s possible... plausible.... but that doesn’t explain why the PCV area has been wet... nor does it explain why my air filter has such a tall stain of oil in its paper material.
I’ll remember to push that local friend to look to see if the leak down tester he has is correct, he thought it may be for diesel when I asked a few days ago.

I’ve been watching my oil fill cap... it does grow a layer of the mix too. Never been ‘bad’ so I chalked it up to the same, condensate. This was the cap yesterday....

Yeah lovely.... talk about learning through error.

I’ve got a head gasket hanging up in the shop just in case mine went bad. Happens to a lot of people - which is why I had the spare - and I don’t think you did anything wrong. I’ll check it to see if it’s still viable and the correct one and send it out to you if it’s a match.

That would be awesome.... but aren’t you sure you want to keep it?
