Ok so my 40 is just being terrible. I parked it for a while then decided to do a tune up. So new plugs, points, rotor, plug wires, new "toyota oem" carb from eBay, new air filter... Now when I try to start my 40 it runs then hammers it and then stalls every time! I have tried filling the fuel bowl with gas to make it run for longer... Nothing... I have tried adjusting carb all the way in and 2 turns out on both nothing... I installed an electric fuel pump... nothing.. Charged battery, replaced starter, and even tried replacing the fuel idle solenoid. I am out of things to try! I have a video of what it is doing... I am starting to think vacuum leak around base plate of carb. Watch vid and tell me what you think. I may have messed something above up please feel free to ridicule and critique... I am a car guy but the FJ has me beat! Thanks

It was leaking and it was just easier to get new carb than to do a complete rebuild kit. I thought I was getting a high quality carb... I dunno

All on its own. I thought the carb could have just been funkily adjusted but I have been messing with it and no results. Also I have been keeping the choke just cracked open because thats when it seems to start the easiest.

Yea I wasn't touching the gas... But that could be because I poured some gas into the carb to get it to start.

Was it running before replacing carb? Holding an idle, even if it was only a poor idle? If you swap the old carb back on what happens?

Get a Hygrade rebuild kit, and some Berrymans carb soak. Spend a weekend rebuilding the old carb using The Pinhead videos on YouTube. Easy as pie, even for an amateur. Just pay attention to details. Sounds like the EBay carb is worse than the old carb.

Is the idle solenoid working properly? If you connect it to the battery does it click?

What is a new "Toyota OEM" carb from E-bay? Got a link? Is it actually a Toyota carb, or a cheap Chinese knockoff? There are a lot of people unhappy with knockoff carbs on this site. To me, it sounds like an issue with the carb. IMHO, your best bet is to buy a quality rebuild kit from a reputable dealer, watch Pinhead's carb rebuild videos on YouTube (1st one linked below), and go to town on your old carb. They really aren't that hard to rebuild, especially when you have a resource like Pinhead's videos.

Well figured it out today guys. It wasn't the carb well sorta not the carb. Carb related. The gas had already gone bad it had only been a month or two and I thought I had stabil in it but I re routed the hose to pick up fresh gas and ran great! So who knew. Thanks for all the help I never would have checked it without the hints

You sure you don't have a fuel line block or tank rust?

Yea shouldn't have gone bad that fast so Im thinking I picked up the old can after bring home the new one to fill it up. Mystery. Anyway thanks for the help. Logging off!

What year is your cruiser..? You going to rebuild your old carb or..?? Just curious....
