While not directly related to working on the 40, I earned a future weekend of dedicated cruiser work: hung a new handle and put a nice edge on the GF's old family axe. Apparently it was a wedding gift from her great grandpa to her parents and had already served a long life. No maker's mark but it is good steel with much life left in the bit.

Installed the locking hub housing and gasket, temporarily used a 10mm bolt to pull/push the axle to properly seat the snap ring in place.

Removed 10mm bolt packed cavity with grease and installed the locking hub mechanism with a new star gasket.
Also used oil based red paint to accentuate the instructional lettering.

Picked up two reman Toyota calipers today from NAPA at a great price and they look good and no painting required.

Today I started the passenger side knuckle disassembly what a horrifying condition it was in. When I cracked it open it was like black gold, Texas tea, I felt that I struck oil as the crude came pouring out of dark cavity where grease used to once live and lubricate the birf. Now comes the most unpleasant part of having to clean the crude mess.

Here's the good part of the goo free flowing down into pan, it smelled like money to me but was only a momentary dream of black gold then reality set in Wow now I have to clean up all this effluent? Someone needs to invent a knuckle diaper.

Neatly contained in my tray just like a TV dinner

Have y'all had enough pics yet?

This is what happens when a good oil seal goes BAD! It transforms grease into crud. My knuckles will never be the same!

Stay tuned for the cleanup, the Valdez clean up team is about to commence tidying things up...

Got my 74 40 back after having a 1980 four speed and TC case rebuilt and installed. What a difference! Case is very quiet- no more whine. Got rid of the vibration at 50+ mph as well. Getting cool here in the Midwest, so installed the hard top and doors. Ready for fall/winter!

Took mine for the first proper drive (longer than 500 feet lol) since i got it back together. With head lights and brake lights and a fuse box and other vital things like that. Even took it down a couple few trails and tested out 2 and 4 low and the suspension.

Drove better than i thought it would overall and i was impressed which is a good thing i guess..

something small and simple to install, but another step along the how-it-came-from-the-factory path that I'm kind of anal about ... I bought the Cruiser Corp jumpseat straps ... they fit like a glove ... only downside is they don't sell the original khaki colour ... 100 per cent better than the bungee cords they replaced ... the label attached at the factory on the seat back is on each jumpseat but unreadable, unfortunately ...
