That's sweet.. My local dealership. Cruiser friendly people (at least in the parts department)... Been called TOYOTA 101 for years now..
A coworker's father used to work there, back in the 70s. He told me a story that, as a kid, he hit the rubicon with his dad, and other dealership guys, in dealer inventory FJ40s. Driving them hard. Then had them back on the sales floor Monday morning. He has pictures too. Pretty awesome stuff. His dad just passed 8 or so months ago. Last name Fuller, if anyone was around then. @Racer65

I know a couple long time parts department guys that have worked their for years.. I'll talk to them one of these days.. My dad used to work there back in the days too. Long before when they had a body shop there at the dealer (he was a body man). Small world, and cool story bout the CON...

I got my FJ45 all gutted and ready to take to the body shop. Pretty psyched, I've never done anything like this before. Came apart fairly easily. I've only got one hand to use (injured my left hand), just took my time. Got most everything bagged and tagged. I just have basic hand tools, that being said the motor and transmission were out of it when I bought it. Having fun!

Bag-and-tag and a proper "filing system" for them and all the bits is probably the most important thing you can do to make the process pleasurable and unfrustrating on yourself. That and just biting the bullet and getting all the sheet metal sandblasted right at the outset. Another thing that I discovered only very late in my build is rust removal from the smaller parts by using electrolysis. It is simple and safe and best of all happens by itself cutting out hours of tedious scraping and sanding and gives a beautifully smooth clean base to work on. I would have saved literally hundreds of hours of work if I had tried it earlier.

You're looking good so far.

Loaded up the cruiser last Saturday afternoon and hauled her back to the hill country for a rebuild. All the wiring was removed prior to the body swap by the PO years ago, but the engine still turns by hand so I'm optimistic. The passenger side windshield hinge broke during the windshield fold down operation for the trip- good thing I think I have a spare... But that means getting the screws out to replace the hinge. The rebuild thread will begin shortly...

Looks in decent shape. Be sure to soak the cylinders with oil to loosen up the rings... Cost me a 2F years back when I didn't know any better.

Sanded the black primer on factory new wheels, wiped down with lacquer thinner and painted with Rustoleum "Smoke Gray". Painted a bunch of small parts I had Glass bead blasted. Rain and cold weather coming in tomorrow so needed to get the paint finished. My shop is heated but don't like to paint inside shop.

I picked up the last piece of the puzzle from the body shop on Thursday evening.

Would very much like to see pics of said "Smoke Gray" on wheels. I'm considering a color change for the white spokes on my 45.

In stalled a new prototype weatherstrip from @Racer65 on the lower hatch lip of the Karma Cruiser. Fit was perfect.;)

The patina on that rig is amazing.

The patina on that rig is amazing.

It had been recently covered with dark green durabak inside and out when I bought it originally (it came from Washington state originally which helps explain the rust creeping out from under the durabak). But the Texas sun and rain have taken their toll over the last 10+ years. The plan is to remove the durabak on the outside (already scraped it off the rear hatch) and go back with dark olive drab (vietnam era GI color). Still trying to talk the wife out of the red crosses she wants painted on the doors...

Tell the wife the red crosses will look great, as long as she wears a nurse's uniform every time she rides in it!

Double like!

She plans too since she is a nurse... She wants to drive it to and from the hospital. The idea started when she saw a m715 ambulance parked at a gas station and sent me a photo with instructions " I want my cruiser to look like that".

Mark,
I may have to take the gun racks off the roll bar if it gets the ambulance paint job though...

That's okay, as long as you don't weld up the holes. It's part of that truck's history. I still have the gun rack holes in the back of the 45s cab. And the puttied over bullet hole in the driver's door. Ever read my TT story "The Ghost in the Machine"?
