Black soot on the underside of the hood that looks a lot like a fan belt that is starting to fail. Five decades of wrenching on cruisers says further investigation required. Grab the fan blade. Yup. Half an hour later:

At least you caught it during a preventative inspection instead of out in the Mojave....😇👈

12,470 volt, 600 amp primary feeder, looks like the deadbreak was getting warm! It was amazing that we even found parts to make the repairs on Saturday, stuff like that is very uncommon in this part of the country.

It was noticed during routine testing and maintenance.
 
Almost time to lose the top!
I’m actually thinking about leaving it on this year just removing the front and rear doors. May add some half doors as well.
 
Started tearing down in preparation for timing, pushrod, and oil pan gaskets.

You know, if you do the oil pan gasket first ( you’ll be able to inspect the lobes on the camshaft for wear ) you could replace the cam before you button up the timing cover. Looks like it would clear that cross member. If it came to that, you’d be half way to the lifters as well. The other half being the fuel pump, rocker assembly and pushrods. Just saying 🙄

The impeller bearing in the water pump was not tight any more. Grabbing the fan and giving a wiggle is about an easy a test as you can do.

Years ago I had a customer drive in a 40 with some serious rusty water stains on the underside of the hood. Couldn’t see any water dripping…until I wiggled the fan blade!😱. Bearing was shot. BUT, the seal would still hold when the truck wasnt running!

So true! I WAS going to take this truck to Death Valley last month. Karma played me an excellent hand there.

I told all my desert friends that had I not taken the Colorado instead, I would have turned around in Ridgecrest, halfway there, and come home. Horrible windstorm. So bad it literally ripped a lid open on one of my roof boxes, dispensing with some of my clothes across the desert! Pushing the aerodynamic brick of an FJ40 into that headwind would not have been advisable.

Changing a water pump in those conditions would have been a nightmare.

Here, I can look at it over a :beer: and decide how deeply down the ‘while you’re in there’ rabbit hole I want to go. Other than a few oil changes, I really haven’t been under the hood of this one much since @StaleAle @Spike Strip and @YOYOKID came over to the house and helped me drop in the ‘temporary’ replacement engine…12 years ago!😛

The engine that belongs in this truck is still sitting, in pieces, on the floor of my garage.☹️
