Here are some more pics of my flip key (and I'll link/repost to the flipping key thread ;)
Not sure why mine works, but I am glad. Its a snug fit when the key is in the lock, perhaps either the key body is different and places the transponder closer to the antenna, or, when Ace cut the blank they cut it higher on the shaft? Here're the people I bought it from on ebay:

Is this key and housing any stronger than the factory key and housing? I've gone through one on my LC and one on my wife's LC.

Can't find my key right now to post a picture, but 100% certain that my flip key had the "guts" rotated 90° to what your flip key shows. That may make all the difference.

Painted the trim and plasti dipped the emblems

Yes, I think so. The plastic body of the key holder is wider and thicker than the OEM one, and theres a big hunk of metal at the pivot of the key in the plastic body.

LostAfrican,
That's an old trade secret from my sports car days when I was doing car shows.

I use a Dremel with a wire wheel to take off the top layer of grime/rust/yuck then it's one application of good old Testors model paint.

Yup. One small bottle of Testors ($1.79) did all four calipers. It holds up extremely well. I've used it on several "big brake" cars inclduing my RX-7 and Supra. The autocrossed the RX-7 and the paint held up to some serious heat stress.

Thanks for that! I see something like this in my near future. I want to paint my wheels (a dark color) so it'll be good to take care of my calipers while I have the wheels off. I looked the pain up on-line and I could do every caliper a different color! :)

Found it. This is the one linked in another thread from Amazon.

Hit a milestone!

I have an idea why my flip key won't work in my rig.
I WILL HAVE TO DO SOME TRIAL AND ERROR TO CONFIRM MY THEORY.

This a pic of LostAfrican's key.

This the same key I have that WILL NOT WORK in my rig. Due to the immobilizer. Anyone see what is different between the two and maybe why the immobilizer won't pick up the chip in the key?

I am going to assume that the bottom one the key FOB is installed sideways compare to Lostafrican's key which you install the old remote facing into the key tumbler.
On the bottom remote the panic button would be on the bottom left hole. Notice the small hole for the remote's red indicator light, compared to the top pic where the panic button is on the right side. And the hole for red light is closer to the tumbler. I am going to bet you that is the side of the remote where the chip is located inside. So when it it is on that side making it closer to the receiver when the key is in the tumbler.
I have the same one as the bottom pic, so my rig cannot pick up the chip because its on the other die of the flip key.

Singha-

The transponder is on the right side of the key (tip facing ignition). It the remote is turned 90* clock wise the transponder may be to far from the ignition. Try folding the key when it's in the ignition and see it that turns off the security light.

starting lockers and UCA

Just received some nice presents from the man in brown. time to install this weekend.

Installed my 100 non AHC rear coils and out another turn on the torsion bars. Also mounted my Rotopax 4 gal gas and 2x2 gal water containers on my expo rack.

Pic of the rotopax setup? Can't get mine exactly right, curious how you mounted.

singha, I have the flip key with the buttons rotated 90*. Works just fine on my '98 and the imobilizer chip is right near the key part so it's really close to the receiver behind the dash, just like a stock key. Are you sure you're mounting it in the right place? I posted links in another thread that links to the Amazon page where I bought it. Another owner uploaded pics of just how to mount the chip.

I used the mounting plate that they sell which holds two mounts. Here is a pic of them mounted, I will remove the cans and take a picture of how the plate is mounted to the rack cross bars.

I don't doubt he's having problems. I also bought the Amazon key you linked and it didn't work in my '04. There's only one way to mount the internals. I have the eBay key en route, will post up if it solves the problem. There may be hardware differences in the immobilizer between years that would change sensitivity.

Wait, does your '98 have a separate immobilizer chip, the little bean-shaped one, or all in the three-button piece?

Alex,
Did you use plastidip on the trim as well as the emblems? If so, did you have to do any prep beforehand? Looks good.
Happy Thanksgiving all!

I used plasti dip on the emblems only.

As far as the trim goes, I did the following:
1. Taped and placed plastic sheeting to prevent overspray
1. Used 2 scotch brite pads to rough up the paint (very fine, then ultra fine)
2. Used tack cloth to clean off the dust
3. Base coat of primer
4. 5 coats of Toyota 8L4 (Atlantis Blue
5. 2 coats of clear coat to finish it off

Couldn't be happier with the way it looks. It sure helps to have a friend who works in the automotive aftermarket department for 3M :)
