mudflaps, bug screen and a big day
Another catch-up post for me.
Over the last couple of weeks I added some home made front mud flaps, a bug screen for the radiators, changed my ignition shaft and replaced two perfectly good heater "T's" - all in the name of baselining.
Mudflaps. I couldn't bring myself to pay almost a $100 for front mudflaps - OEM or not, so I went to Napa and bought a 24"x 24" semi mud flap for a whopping $14. I cut it up and made two flaps for the hundy. I also made a pair for the Tacoma. On the Tacoma I had one left on the front and used it as a stencil. I noticed on the original that it had slots to allow the flap to tear away if bound, so I added those to my new ones for both the Tacoma and hundy.

I really like that these DIY flaps can flex so much - which I think is an improvement over the OEM ones because they could break sliding over a rock for e.g. My helper Dude showing the flex:
They also drop down lower than the OEM ones I think - and should be compatible with my sliders...
At HD I bought some charcoal coloured fibreglass insect screen and cut a piece to fit over the radiator assembly. I have seen this done on larger trucks and thought it would be a good idea to protect the radiators and condenser coils from bugs and make them easier to clean. I have an Ultra-gauge and have used it to monitor before and after engine temps - with no noticeable difference. Of course its pretty cool here in AZ at the moment.
I have also been doing some touch up painting to various scratches and what not on the body - glad this hundy is white! I did this to fend off any future rust spots and to clean up some areas. I have been using a small can of rustoleum gloss white and a brush.
As part of baselining I also replaced the heater "T's" which appeared to be "like new" - 01 hundy has 90k miles, so this appears to be more of a milage based item than an age based item....or the PO replaced them. Similarly I replaced my ignition switch shaft before it broke. This was an ordeal only because the first one I got was actually the electric tilt version which is almost identical, except the blade at the end that turns the electrical switch is rotated ~45 degrees!! Once I got the right part, it was a quick change - really not bad as long as the original is not already broken.
Also this 01 hundy finally turned over the big 90k on a quick trip to Tucson for family photo shoot.
After that we made a camping trip to the So. Cal coast to scout out some good family camping sites for the summer... Hundy was awesome (except I think I may have some CV clicking!?), but we came home early because it was so freakin cold! We checked out Jalama and Refugio beaches/parks.
Next up are (1) to check out the CV's, maybe get some smooth-edged clamps from PFRAN, and (2) install the new Kenwood HU and amp I bought for Christmas. I also have some sliders coming from MT....
